The MME group within the Engineering Department is responsible for providing specific engineering solutions that combine mechanical design, fabrication, and material sciences. The position involves working on the mechanical construction of beam accelerator components and physics detectors, which requires a strong understanding of CAD design, advanced calculations, and various manufacturing processes. The Design Office is tasked with the mechanical design of components necessary for CERN's accelerators and detectors, which includes high-tech equipment such as superconducting magnets and vacuum systems. The role requires the ability to take conceptual ideas and develop them into fully detailed engineered solutions using parametric 3D modeling and 2D drafting, along with conducting structural, thermal, fluid-dynamic, shock, and vibration analyses.
Duties and Responsibilities: As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will work under the supervision of a senior design engineer to design and develop mechanical components and systems from concept to production. Your responsibilities will include creating detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using CATIA V5 while adhering to ISO GPS norms. You will also carry out simple structural analytical and numerical calculations, collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure design feasibility and manufacturability, and continuously improve designs based on feedback and testing results. Additionally, you will participate in problem-solving and troubleshooting activities related to design and production issues, and maintain accurate documentation of designs, modifications, and project progress.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must be a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State. By the application deadline, you should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, with your highest educational qualification being either a Bachelor's or Master's degree. It is important to note that applicants who have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract are not eligible, and those without a university degree or with a PhD are also not eligible for this position.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. The compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging between 5196 and 5716 Swiss Francs (net of tax), coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme for the employee and their family, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances. Employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave per year, and there are opportunities for on-the-job and formal training at CERN, as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.
