The Protection Unit, composed of 8 members, supports the Representation's actions by maintaining a thorough understanding of the French legal protection framework and its developments, conducting field monitoring missions, and training actors in international protection. It collaborates with individuals under its mandate, institutional partners, and civil society partners.
Job Overview: The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is designed to support the Protection Associate in various monitoring, advocacy, and coordination tasks related to the socio-economic inclusion of refugees and family reunification themes. The intern will engage in legal research and drafting, follow legislative, jurisprudential, and political news, prepare internal meetings or external events with associative and institutional partners, and write reports. Additionally, the intern will prepare interventions and external training sessions, assist in reception/counseling activities for asylum seekers/refugees, and participate in status verifications in the first asylum countries of applicants. The role requires a proactive approach to support the unit's needs and adapt to various tasks as they arise.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for conducting legal research and drafting legal notes, monitoring legislative, jurisprudential, and political developments, preparing internal meetings and external events with partners, writing meeting minutes, preparing interventions and training sessions, supporting reception and counseling activities for asylum seekers/refugees, participating in status verifications in first asylum countries, and performing any other activities as needed by the Protection Unit.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should be recent graduates (i.e., individuals who have completed their studies within the two years preceding their application for the UNHCR internship) or currently pursuing higher education at a university or higher education institution recognized by UNESCO. They must have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a relevant field or one that is of interest to the organization's work (such as human rights, public law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">international law, international relations, political science, etc.). Candidates should possess in-depth knowledge of the asylum procedure in France and the actors involved, strong writing skills in both French and English, research, analysis, and synthesis abilities, organizational skills, and a methodical and rigorous approach to work. Autonomy, responsiveness, and adaptability are also essential qualities.
Educational Background: A minimum of two years of undergraduate studies in a relevant field is required. Preferred fields include International Refugee Law, International Relations, or Law. Candidates should have a strong academic background that aligns with the mission and activities of the UNHCR.
Experience: The position is aimed at recent graduates or students currently pursuing their studies, thus requiring no extensive prior work experience. However, familiarity with the legal framework surrounding asylum and refugee issues is advantageous.
Languages: Mandatory languages include French at a minimum C2 level and English at a minimum B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Knowledge of additional languages is considered a plus but is not required.
Additional Notes: The internship is a full-time position requiring 40 hours per week, with a duration of 5 to 6 months minimum. The ideal start date for the internship is July 8, 202
The current stipend is approximately €1480 per month, which helps cover food, local transportation, and living expenses for interns who do not receive financial support from other organizations.
