Interns will support the Americas Section by engaging in various tasks that involve the collection and analysis of information related to human rights issues in the Americas region. The role is pivotal in assisting Human Rights Officers and Desk Officers in their efforts to monitor, report, and advocate for human rights protections. Interns will gain valuable experience in research, documentation, and the workings of international human rights mechanisms, while also developing a deeper understanding of the challenges faced in the promotion and protection of human rights.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will have a range of responsibilities that may include: compiling and analyzing information on human rights situations, assisting in the preparation of reports and documents related to Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures, and Universal Periodic Review (UPR) processes. They will support Human Rights Officers in researching and drafting documents on human rights developments and incidents in the Americas. Interns will also update country profiles, prepare briefing packages, and assist in the documentation of thematic and country-specific human rights issues. Additional tasks may involve taking minutes during meetings, attending relevant sessions of the Human Rights Council, and performing other duties as assigned by supervisors.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the internship, candidates must be enrolled in their final year of a first-level university degree program or in a graduate school program, or have completed such a degree. Preferred fields of study include law, international relations, public administration, political science, social sciences, or related disciplines. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to human rights and possess the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
Educational Background: Candidates should have a background in law, international relations, public administration, political science, social sciences, or a related field. Enrollment in a university program at the time of application is mandatory, and candidates must be in their final academic year or have completed their degree.
Experience: While prior work experience is not mandatory, any relevant experience in human rights, research, or international relations will be considered an asset. Interns should demonstrate a keen interest in human rights issues and a willingness to learn and contribute to the work of OHCHR.
