Job Overview:
The position of Project Graduate in the Exhibitions at CERN offers a unique opportunity to engage in the development of innovative and educational experiences for visitors. The role is situated within the Exhibitions section of the Education, Communications and Outreach group, which is part of the International Relations sector. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating content for CERN Science Gateway and its temporary exhibitions, which aim to provide an engaging and informative experience for visitors of all ages. The exhibitions team curates three permanent exhibitions and develops additional exhibits for guided tours across CERN's various locations. The role involves collaboration with external museums and the development of traveling exhibitions, ensuring that sustainability and accessibility are prioritized in all projects. The candidate will be expected to start in Summer 2025, contributing to upcoming projects that include new temporary exhibitions focused on the jobs of science and CERN's future projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As a member of CERN's exhibitions team, the Project Graduate will undertake a variety of tasks including: developing creative content for exhibitions by researching stories in collaboration with the scientific community; defining the structure of messages to be conveyed; coordinating the design and build phases of exhibits; ensuring that all content is accessible to a diverse audience; playing a key role in the conception, prototyping, testing, and production of hands-on experiments for temporary exhibitions; participating in the evaluation of exhibit content with relevant audience groups; and writing engaging texts for labels of interactives, objects, multimedia, and hands-on experiments. The role requires a proactive approach to collaboration and communication with various stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of exhibition projects.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and possess a professional background in Museum Studies, Science Communication, STEM, or a related field. They should have either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. Additionally, candidates must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract. An initial Physics degree is considered an advantage, along with experience in developing hands-on exhibits for interactive science exhibitions and an understanding of the needs of various audience groups, particularly regarding inclusivity and universal design.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree or PhD in Museum Studies, Science Communication, STEM, or a related field. Candidates should have a strong foundation in physics or a related discipline, which will aid in the development of engaging content for exhibitions. The educational qualifications should be complemented by relevant professional experience in the field.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 2 years of post-graduation professional experience if holding a Master's degree, or up to 3 years if holding a PhD. Experience should include developing hands-on exhibits for interactive science exhibitions and working with a diverse range of audience groups, from primary school students to adults. Familiarity with the principles of inclusivity and universal design is essential, as is the ability to produce engaging content for non-specialist audiences.

Languages:
A strong command of English or French is mandatory, particularly in writing and editing. Candidates should also have good knowledge of the other language, both spoken and written, or demonstrate a commitment to rapidly acquire proficiency. This bilingual capability is crucial for effectively communicating with a diverse audience and for the development of exhibition content.

  • The position offers a monthly stipend ranging from 6287 to 6911 Swiss Francs (net of tax), along with coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme for the employee and their family, membership in the CERN Pension Fund, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances. Employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave per year and will receive on-the-job and formal training at CERN, including in-house language courses for English and/or French.
