Job Overview:
The Associate position in the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) division of Human Rights Watch is designed for a highly motivated individual who will provide essential administrative support to the team. The ECA division focuses on advancing human rights across Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Turkey. The role involves a variety of tasks that include administrative duties, coordination of communication among HRW offices, and support for staff working on critical issues such as Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, and Central Asian countries. The candidate will be expected to work in the New York office at least three days a week, collaborating closely with colleagues both locally and internationally. This position is crucial for ensuring the smooth operation of the division and facilitating effective communication and workflow across different time zones.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Associate include providing day-to-day administrative support to division staff, which encompasses scheduling meetings, making travel arrangements, processing expense reports, and maintaining web pages. The Associate will assist with the procurement of visas and travel documents, create and maintain filing systems, and respond to information requests. Additionally, the role involves preparing and editing various materials such as reports, news releases, and web content. The Associate will maintain communication among HRW offices and external partners, manage document transmission to translators, and assist with desk research and advocacy contacts mapping. The position also includes planning and executing events, attending external meetings, and supporting the ECA advisory committee's operations. Furthermore, the Associate will help with recruiting and mentoring interns and staff, and carry out other duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent working experience in human rights, international relations, social science, or a related field. A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required. Strong organizational skills and prior office/administration experience are essential. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are mandatory, along with proficiency in reading and oral communication in Russian. Candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in international human rights and possess strong interpersonal skills. The ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks, and function both independently and as part of a team is crucial. Attention to detail and professional communication skills are required, as is proficiency in MS Office applications.

Educational Background:
A bachelor’s degree in human rights, international relations, social science, or a related field is required for this position. Equivalent working experience may also be considered in lieu of formal education. The educational background should ideally provide a solid understanding of human rights issues and the international landscape in which HRW operates.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of one year of relevant work experience. This experience should ideally be in an administrative or support role within a non-profit organization, governmental agency, or similar environment where human rights or international relations are a focus. Candidates should demonstrate their ability to manage multiple tasks and work effectively in a fast-paced setting.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent oral and written communication skills required. Proficiency in Russian is also required, particularly in reading and oral communication. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory for this position.

Additional Notes:
This is a full-time position based in the New York office, with the expectation that the candidate will work at least three days per week in the office.
