The Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) was established by the Human Rights Council in its resolution 39/2 on September 27, 2018, to investigate serious international crimes such as crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide, as well as other violations of law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">international law.   • The IIMM operates with a mission to ensure accountability for these serious crimes and to support the victims and their families. The organization is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and is part of the broader United Nations system, which aims to uphold human rights and promote justice globally.

Job Overview:
The Information Analyst position is situated within the Collection, Analysis and Sharing Section (CASS) of the IIMM. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of an Investigator, P-4, and will be responsible for conducting in-depth research and analysis of information related to sexual and gender-based crimes (SGBC) and crimes against and affecting children (CAAC). This role requires proficiency in both Myanmar languages and English, as the analyst will gather, evaluate, and analyze information to identify relevance and gaps, thereby informing investigative activities. The position emphasizes the importance of gender and intersectional analysis, requiring the analyst to provide strategic advice and develop analytical products that support criminal liability for SGBC and CAAC. The role also involves liaising with various organizations, conducting interviews, and maintaining electronic information management systems to facilitate criminal prosecutions and investigations. The analyst will contribute to the development of protocols and guidance documents related to the collection and analysis of information pertinent to the IIMM's mandate.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Information Analyst include:
  • Conducting comprehensive research and analysis of information in Myanmar languages and English related to SGBC and CAAC.
  • Gathering and evaluating information to identify gaps and inform investigative decisions.
  • Providing strategic advice on gender and intersectional analysis, and developing analytical products.
  • Liaising with relevant organizations and individuals, making logistical arrangements for incidents related to SGBC or CAAC.
  • Organizing and conducting interviews of witnesses, particularly those related to SGBC or CAAC.
  • Maintaining and updating the IIMM's electronic information management systems for the preservation of information relevant to criminal prosecutions.
  • Participating in briefings and conferences, providing language support as needed.
  • Contributing to the development of protocols and guidance documents on information collection and analysis.
  • Performing other duties as required, including interpretation and translation on an ad hoc basis.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a strong set of qualifications, including:
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct investigative analysis of SGBC and CAAC.
  • Strong analytical and evaluative skills, particularly in applying gender-sensitive and child-friendly approaches.
  • Knowledge of strategies for complex criminal investigations and the ability to analyze activities related to potential war crimes and crimes against humanity.
  • Good judgment in managing assignments and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Commitment to gender perspectives and ensuring equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.
  • Collaborative teamwork skills and the ability to value others' ideas and expertise.
  • Technological awareness and the ability to apply technology to relevant tasks.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in fields such as Asian studies, conflict or security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security studies, women's or gender studies, law, social science, or related disciplines. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible work experience is required, specifically in analyzing serious international crimes, including SGBC and/or CAAC. Experience related to Myanmar is desirable, as is work with women's organizations, LGBTQI+ organizations, or other civil society organizations in Myanmar. Familiarity with analytical software and experience in investigative, prosecutorial, or judicial institutions at the national or international level are also preferred.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in the Myanmar language (Burmese) is also mandatory. Knowledge of additional languages used in Myanmar, such as Chin, Kachin, Rakhine, Ta’ang, Karenni, Karen, Rohingya, or Shan, is considered desirable.
