Job Overview: The Programme Coordinator will serve as the Head of the UNODC Programme Office in Mauritania, responsible for representing UNODC's interests and building partnerships with government institutions, civil society, and international partners. The role involves defining program objectives, managing the development and implementation of technical assistance, and ensuring that UNODC's mandates are integrated into the broader UN initiatives in Mauritania. Duties and Responsibilities: The duties of the Programme Coordinator include representing UNODC in Mauritania, coordinating with the Regional Office for West and Central Africa, building partnerships with UN entities, monitoring program implementation, and contributing to reports on drug control and crime prevention. The Coordinator will also identify areas for program growth, develop resource mobilization strategies, advocate for drug control and crime prevention issues, manage financial and human resources, ensure gender considerations are integrated into programs, and oversee project management activities. Additional responsibilities include preparing terms of reference for staff and consultants, managing corporate measures for UN reform, and ensuring coordination with UNODC operations in the Southern Africa region. The role also involves data collection and analysis to support decision-making and reporting.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong knowledge of theories and concepts related to crime control, drug prevention, and terrorism issues. They should have good research and analytical skills, experience in leading and coordinating resource mobilization efforts, and familiarity with UN program policies and guidelines. The ability to identify and solve problems, analyze data, and convey information effectively is essential. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and the ability to incorporate gender perspectives into their work.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political or social sciences, public or business administration, economics, law, international relations, or a similar field is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible professional work experience in project or program management related to drug control, crime prevention, corruption, or terrorism in an international setting is required. Experience in managing office operations, promoting UN partnerships, and engaging with government counterparts is desirable. Familiarity with program planning, monitoring, and reporting, as well as experience with the United Nations system or similar organizations, is also beneficial. Experience in data analytics is a plus.
Languages: Fluency in English is required, and working knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
