Job Overview:
The Epidemiologist Consultant will play a crucial role in UNICEF's Public Health Emergency (PHE) preparedness and response efforts. This position involves analyzing epidemiological data, maintaining a public health threats database, and producing reports and newsletters that inform UNICEF's operational response to health emergencies. The consultant will work closely with the Immunization team and Supply Division to support outbreak response efforts, focusing on emerging and re-emerging pathogens. The role requires a proactive approach to surveillance, monitoring, and public health communication, ensuring that UNICEF's response is informed by the latest data and evidence.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for maintaining the public health threats database, analyzing epidemiological data to identify trends and outbreaks, and drafting reports and recommendations. They will facilitate weekly epidemiological reviews, produce evidence reviews on the situation of children during outbreaks, and draft technical briefs and epidemiological updates on public health threats. Additionally, the consultant will conduct risk assessments, facilitate engagement with the infectious disease outbreak response cell, and draft the Epidemiological and Analytics section of reports on UNICEF's response to cholera outbreaks. The consultant is expected to produce a minimum of 25 updates to the public health threats database, 10 to 15 draft reports, and 5 to 10 evidence reviews during the assignment period.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Masters) in a relevant field such as Epidemiology, Public Health, or Social Sciences. They should have 8-10 years of progressively responsible professional work experience in infectious disease and/or Public Health Emergency analytics at national and international levels. Experience working with UNICEF or other UN organizations during public health emergencies is highly desirable. Proficiency in PC/web applications, strong engagement skills, and fluency in English with a working level of French are required.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Masters) in Epidemiology, Public Health, or Social Sciences is required for this position. This educational background is essential to ensure that the consultant has the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively analyze public health data and contribute to UNICEF's emergency response efforts.

Experience:
The position requires 8-10 years of relevant professional experience, particularly in infectious disease and Public Health Emergency analytics. Candidates should have experience working in both national and international contexts, with a strong understanding of public health systems and emergency response frameworks. Previous experience with UNICEF or similar organizations during health emergencies will be considered a significant asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, along with a working level of French. These language skills are essential for effective communication and collaboration within the UNICEF team and with external partners.

  • The consultant will be required to submit a financial proposal that includes costs per deliverable, travel costs, and any other estimated expenses. UNICEF will cover any emergent duty travel and related expenses. Selected candidates must have valid health insurance coverage and will undergo rigorous background checks. The position is not considered a staff member role, and consultants are responsible for their tax liabilities.
