Job Posting Organization:
The position is located within the Data Science and Decision-Support Division (DSDSD) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). ESCWA was established in 1973 and is one of the regional commissions of the United Nations, aimed at fostering economic and social development in the Arab region. The organization operates in multiple countries across the Middle East and North Africa, focusing on various areas including sustainable development, economic integration, and social justice. ESCWA employs a diverse workforce dedicated to promoting regional cooperation and addressing the challenges faced by member states.

Job Overview:
The Systems Monitoring Intern will be part of the Data Science and Decision-Support Division, which plays a crucial role in ESCWA's modernization and innovation efforts. This division provides advanced analytics and decision-support services to ESCWA, other UN entities, and Member States, aligning with the UN 2.0 agenda. The intern will gain hands-on experience in IT infrastructure, network monitoring, and cybersecurity systems, working closely with experienced IT professionals. This internship is designed to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application, allowing the intern to develop skills in monitoring and troubleshooting IT systems. The intern will support the development of ESCWA's IT services monitoring program, focusing on early identification of problems and risks to enhance service delivery.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks during their internship, including: assisting in the monitoring and investigation of ICT infrastructure systems such as SIEM and network monitoring; monitoring network access, system logs, wireless connectivity, and overall network performance; monitoring cybersecurity systems including log analysis tools and firewalls; conducting vulnerability assessments for applications, services, networks, and servers; reviewing and tracking identified vulnerabilities and supporting responses to cybersecurity events; assisting in digital forensic analysis, audits, risk assessments, and penetration tests; developing scripts for log analysis; maintaining cybersecurity tools and applications; performing compliance audits against enterprise security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security controls; creating runbooks, playbooks, security guidelines, and procedures; conducting research on relevant cybersecurity topics; and collaborating with the infrastructure and Cybersecurity Operations team to track vulnerabilities and problems.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet several conditions: they must be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level), or have graduated with a university degree. Additionally, applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications, demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, and possess the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. No prior work experience is required for this position, making it accessible for students and recent graduates.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes enrollment in a graduate program or being in the final year of an undergraduate program. Candidates should have a strong foundation in IT-related fields, particularly those related to cybersecurity, network management, and data analysis. A degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field is preferred, but not mandatory as long as the candidate meets the other qualifications.

Experience:
This internship does not require previous work experience, making it suitable for students or recent graduates looking to gain practical experience in the field of IT systems monitoring and cybersecurity. The focus is on providing a learning opportunity rather than requiring extensive prior experience, allowing candidates to develop their skills in a supportive environment.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable, as it is a working language of ESCWA. Candidates should demonstrate fluency in all four areas of language proficiency (speaking, reading, writing, and understanding) for English, while knowledge of Arabic should be at a confident level in at least two of the four areas.

Additional Notes:
The internship is expected to last for a minimum of two months on a full-time basis, with the possibility of extension for a maximum of six months. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations, and they are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Additionally, interns must provide proof of valid medical insurance coverage for the duration of the internship and submit a medical certificate of good health prior to starting. The United Nations does not charge any fees during the recruitment process, and candidates should be aware of their visa requirements if they are not citizens or permanent residents of Lebanon.
