Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. Established in 1957, the IAEA has a mission to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health, and prosperity throughout the world. The agency has a workforce of approximately 2,500 employees and operates in over 170 countries, providing support and guidance in various nuclear-related fields.

Job Overview:
The internship program at the IAEA is designed to provide students and recent graduates with practical work experience that aligns with their academic studies or interests. Interns will gain exposure to the workings of the IAEA and the broader United Nations system. The internship is typically for a duration of 12 months, allowing interns to contribute to the IAEA's programs while enhancing their own professional skills. Interns will be involved in supporting the Isotope Hydrology Laboratory, specifically in the processing of water samples for stable isotope analysis and sample preparation for tritium analysis. This role is crucial for assisting Member States in managing their water resources effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will work under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Head and will be responsible for several key tasks. These include assisting with the registration of noble gas and helium-3 ingrowth samples, analyzing nitrate concentration in water samples using ion chromatography, preparing and degassing samples for tritium analysis, and developing methodologies for Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) related to water resource management. Additionally, interns will collaborate with Section and Laboratory staff on data analysis, scientific presentations, and manuscript preparation, contributing to the overall research and development efforts of the IAEA.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in environmental sciences, hydrogeology, hydrology, chemistry, or a related field. Expertise in isotope and/or chemical measurements in water samples is considered an asset, as is experience in applying isotope techniques for water resource management. Strong written and spoken English skills are essential, and fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is advantageous.

Educational Background:
Applicants must be at least 20 years old and have completed a minimum of three years of full-time university studies towards a first degree. Candidates may apply up to one year after completing their bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree. It is important that candidates have not previously participated in the IAEA's internship program.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have relevant academic experience, particularly in environmental sciences or related fields. While specific professional experience is not mandatory, any practical experience related to isotope techniques or water resource management will be beneficial and viewed favorably during the selection process.

Languages:
Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory for this position. Additionally, fluency in any of the IAEA's official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
The internship is for a duration of 12 months, and candidates must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application. The position is designed for individuals who are either currently studying or have recently graduated, and it is important to note that candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA's internship program. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a prestigious international organization, contributing to significant global issues related to nuclear science and environmental protection.
