Job Overview: The UN Volunteer will play a crucial role in supporting UNICEF's Learning-to-Earning agenda, which aims to empower adolescents and youth in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, through skills development and entrepreneurship. This position is vital in addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable youth in the region, particularly those affected by conflict and socio-economic vulnerabilities. The volunteer will contribute to the operationalization of the Learning-to-Earning strategy, focusing on skill development, literacy, vocational training, and financial literacy. The role involves engaging with local communities, promoting youth empowerment programs, and facilitating partnerships with various stakeholders to create job opportunities. The volunteer will also support emergency education activities, ensuring that displaced youth have access to educational interventions.
Duties and Responsibilities: The core responsibilities of the UN Volunteer include:
Contributing to the operationalization of UNICEF’s Learning-to-Earning strategy by aligning skill development initiatives with local labor market demands.
Identifying new technical areas for skills development that can lead to secure employment for youth, including green and digital skills.
Facilitating partnerships with local businesses, NGOs, and authorities to create internship and apprenticeship opportunities.
Engaging with local communities to promote UNICEF’s Learning-to-Earning agenda and disseminate information about youth empowerment programs.
Producing and disseminating content such as human interest stories and case studies to showcase the results of the Learning-to-Earning agenda.
Collaborating with the education team to align initiatives with broader education and youth development objectives.
Providing support to emergency education activities for displaced youth when necessary.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong interpersonal skills, the ability to build and maintain partnerships, and a commitment to achieving results for impact. They should demonstrate self-awareness, ethical awareness, and the ability to manage ambiguity and complexity. The ideal candidate will be innovative, strategic, and collaborative, with a drive to nurture and lead others. A strong understanding of the local context and cultural sensitivity is essential for this role.
Educational Background: A degree in education, social sciences, development studies, or a related field is required. Candidates with advanced degrees or specialized training in youth development, vocational training, or entrepreneurship will be given preference. Knowledge of UNICEF's mission and programs, particularly in education and youth empowerment, is highly desirable.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in program development, education, or youth empowerment initiatives. Experience working with vulnerable populations, particularly in conflict-affected areas, is an asset. Familiarity with the local labor market and community engagement strategies is also important. Previous experience with international organizations or NGOs will be beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, while proficiency in Portuguese is highly desirable. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Cabo Delgado will be an advantage, as it will facilitate communication with the community and stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This is a national UN Volunteer assignment based in Pemba, Mozambique. The contract duration is subject to funding availability and satisfactory performance, with no expectation of renewal. The volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. A monthly Volunteer Living Allowance will be provided to cover housing, utilities, and living expenses. Health insurance for the volunteer and up to three dependents is included, along with life and disability insurance. Additionally, a Well-Being Differential will be provided for volunteers in hardship duty stations. Candidates must confirm their fully vaccinated status against COVID-19 prior to appointment, although this requirement does not apply to remote workers.
