Job Overview: The Associate Political Affairs Officer will work under the supervision of the Team Leader for Northeast Asia and the Pacific. The role involves analyzing information from various sources, maintaining knowledge of political issues in the region, and establishing partnerships with regional actors. The officer will assist senior officials with briefing notes and background papers, monitor political and socio-economic developments, prepare summaries and correspondence, and participate in missions to the Northeast Asia and Pacific region. The position requires a proactive approach to providing input into political, humanitarian, and economic efforts and programs, as well as performing other related duties as necessary.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Associate Political Affairs Officer include:
Analyzing information from communications and publications from various sources, including the press.
Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of political issues in the Northeast Asia and Pacific region.
Establishing and maintaining contact with UN presences and regional actors for coordination and policy matters.
Assisting senior officials with briefing notes, background papers, and talking points.
Monitoring political, socio-economic, and other relevant developments in the assigned area.
Preparing summaries of articles and drafting correspondence and sections of reports.
Participating in fact-finding missions and providing recommendations for action.
Contributing to political, humanitarian, and economic efforts and programs.
Performing other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a first-level university degree in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration, or a related field. A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security, development management, conflict resolution, or a related area is required. Experience working on peace and security issues related to the Pacific is essential, while experience with extra-budgetary issues and regional organizations in the Pacific is desirable.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a first-level university degree in fields such as political science, international relations, international economics, law, or public administration. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of political affairs and international relations, particularly in the context of the Asia Pacific region.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in relevant fields such as political science, international relations, law, or conflict resolution. Candidates should have experience specifically related to peace and security issues in the Pacific region, which is critical for effectively addressing the challenges and dynamics of the area. Additional experience with extra-budgetary issues and collaboration with regional organizations is considered an asset.
Languages: Fluency in English, both oral and written, is required for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as French, is considered an advantage and may enhance a candidate's profile.
