Job Overview:
The role of the Volunteer English Language Teacher is to enhance the teaching of English at the secondary school level in Uzbekistan. This position is a unique opportunity for experienced teaching professionals to share their expertise and collaborate with local educators. Volunteers will work closely with in-service teachers to deliver curriculum lessons, conduct professional development sessions, and facilitate coaching workshops. The goal is to improve English language proficiency among both teachers and students, utilizing student-centered methodologies and implementing international best practices. This role not only contributes to the educational landscape in Uzbekistan but also allows volunteers to immerse themselves in a new culture while making a significant impact on the future of English language education.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with local teachers to deliver English language curriculum lessons effectively.
  • Conduct professional development workshops aimed at enhancing teaching methodologies and practices.
  • Provide coaching and support to in-service teachers to improve their English language proficiency.
  • Implement student-centered teaching approaches that engage students and foster a positive learning environment.
  • Share best practices in English language teaching and contribute to the development of teaching resources.
  • Assess and evaluate the progress of students and teachers in their English language skills.
  • Participate in community engagement activities to promote the importance of English language education.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of students and teachers.
  • Maintain regular communication with VSO and local education authorities to report on progress and challenges.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a graduate qualification in English language teaching or a related field. A background in TESOL, TEFL, Linguistics, or similar disciplines is essential. Additionally, candidates should hold recognized teaching certifications such as CELTA, DELTA, TEFL, or TESOL. Experience in secondary or high school teaching is required, along with a passion for capacity building and professional development in English language proficiency. Familiarity with international curricula, particularly those from Cambridge, Oxford, or Pearson, is highly desirable.

Educational Background:
A graduate degree in English language teaching, TESOL, TEFL, Linguistics, or a related field is required. Candidates should also have relevant teaching certifications that validate their qualifications to teach English as a second language.

Experience:
Candidates should have prior experience in secondary or high school teaching, with a strong emphasis on English language instruction. Experience in international teaching contexts is preferred, as it demonstrates adaptability and cultural sensitivity. Familiarity with various teaching methodologies and curricula will be beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as the role involves teaching the language. Knowledge of additional languages may be advantageous but is not required.

This position is a volunteer role, and while the salary is not specified, VSO provides basic local accommodation, a living allowance, and at least three weeks of annual leave aligned with school holidays.
