  • The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (RCO) play a crucial role in supporting countries to meet their development priorities and the SDGs, led by an empowered UN Resident Coordinator who represents the UN Secretary-General at the country level. The UN operates in numerous countries worldwide, employing thousands of staff dedicated to various development initiatives.

Job Overview:
The Development Coordination Officer / Economist position is integral to the UN's efforts in promoting sustainable development and achieving the SDGs. This role involves providing evidence-based analysis and substantive advice to the UN Resident Coordinator and the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) on critical issues related to SDG acceleration, economic transformation, and financing. The officer will be responsible for coordinating the development of integrated SDG programming cycles, facilitating partnerships, and advocating for policies that support sustainable economic growth. The position requires a deep understanding of economic policies, development trends, and the ability to engage with various stakeholders, including government officials and international financial institutions. The officer will also be tasked with knowledge generation and management, ensuring that the UNCT is well-informed about sustainable development challenges and opportunities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct evidence-based analysis of the status of the SDGs, providing advice on SDG acceleration and economic transformation.
  • Support advocacy efforts for partnerships within the UN System and with national counterparts to reframe economic policies for SDG acceleration.
  • Coordinate the development of integrated SDG programming cycles, including roadmaps and annual reports.
  • Plan and direct knowledge management around SDG acceleration and financing agendas.
  • Research and analyze best practices in sustainable development and provide guidance on policies to achieve the SDGs.
  • Monitor regional and global economic trends and their implications for SDG acceleration.
  • Engage with the private sector to identify opportunities for SDG financing.
  • Provide technical advice on innovative economic policies and support the development of investment programs.
  • Foster collaboration and communication among economists within the UN System to create coherent advocacy opportunities. 1
  • Prepare flagship reports on SDG acceleration and financing, ensuring data analysis supports policy recommendations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in sustainable development policy, economic research, and analysis. Experience working with international financial institutions and senior government officials is essential. Knowledge of development economics and familiarity with the SDGs and UN normative agenda is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate outstanding analytical and writing skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly. Proven experience in coordinating multi-stakeholder processes and participatory assessments is also required. Candidates should be able to apply development economics theory to specific country contexts and carry out high-quality economic research.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in economics is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Candidates should have a strong foundation in economic theories and practices relevant to sustainable development.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant experience in sustainable development policy and economic analysis. Candidates should have experience working with international financial institutions and engaging with senior government officials to address complex economic issues. Policy-making experience is desirable, as is familiarity with development economics and the application of SDGs at the national level. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to conduct high-quality research and analysis in the context of development cooperation.

Languages:
Fluency in French is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English and Arabic is desirable, and knowledge of another UN official language is considered an advantage. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'Fluent' in all four areas (reading, speaking, writing, and understanding).
