Job Posting Organization: The Office of the United Nations Ombudsman and Mediation Services (UNOMS) was established as an informal pillar of the internal system of administration of justice within the United Nations. The mission of UNOMS is to provide impartial and neutral services to address work-related concerns of UN personnel. Job Overview: The Consultant for Conflict Resolution is expected to deliver a comprehensive range of informal dispute resolution services to UN personnel, utilizing both in-person and virtual engagement methods. This role is crucial in maintaining a confidential environment where disputes can be addressed effectively. The consultant will be responsible for receiving and managing confidential cases assigned directly from the Office of the Ombudsman. Additionally, the consultant is expected to provide systemic feedback to the Regional Ombudsman regarding any observable conflict patterns in the cases handled. The position is designed to support the overall mission of the UNOMS by helping employees resolve conflicts and concerns in a constructive manner, thereby contributing to a more harmonious workplace.
Duties and Responsibilities: Under the general authority of the UN Ombudsman and the immediate supervision of the Chief of Service/Regional Ombudsman, the Consultant for Conflict Resolution will undertake the following duties:
Provide alternative dispute resolution services to employees of the United Nations Secretariat and other offices served by the informal pillar of the Administration of Justice system.
Conduct mediation sessions, assisting all parties in resolving workplace conflicts through a voluntary and confidential process, acting as a neutral third-party facilitator.
Maintain neutrality, impartiality, and confidentiality towards all visitors, gathering information as appropriate to help identify and understand issues and interests.
Explore options and generate solutions collaboratively with conflicting parties.
Offer creative and expert advice on the best dispute resolution techniques tailored to meet the visitors’ needs.
Develop and maintain relationships with visitors, advising them on the services available from UNOMS.
Assist in follow-up communications to receive feedback and inform visitors of further available services as needed.
Required Qualifications: The position requires an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in conflict resolution, law, social sciences, or a related field. In cases where a candidate possesses a first university degree, a relevant combination of qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Additionally, a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in workplace mediation, workplace dispute resolution, legal, or a related field is required. Training or work experience specifically in conflict resolution, including mediation, is also a prerequisite. Experience in an international organizational setting is desirable, as it provides valuable context for the role.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in fields such as conflict resolution, law, social sciences, or a related discipline. Alternatively, a first university degree combined with relevant qualifications and experience may be considered acceptable. This educational background is essential to ensure that the consultant has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to effectively manage and resolve conflicts within the UN framework.
Experience: The role demands a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in areas such as workplace mediation, dispute resolution, or legal fields. This level of experience is crucial as it equips the consultant with the necessary skills and insights to navigate complex workplace dynamics and facilitate effective conflict resolution. Additionally, training or work experience specifically in conflict resolution, including mediation, is required to ensure that the consultant can perform their duties effectively and with confidence.
Languages: Fluency in written and oral English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within the UN. Additionally, fluency in either Chinese or Spanish is required, providing the consultant with the ability to engage with a diverse range of UN personnel and stakeholders. Proficiency in these languages enhances the consultant's effectiveness in mediation and conflict resolution, allowing for clear communication and understanding among all parties involved.
Additional Notes: The position is remote and is expected to last for a duration of six months.
