Job Overview:
The Director of International Relations at CERN will play a pivotal leadership role in shaping and implementing the organization's international relations strategy. This position is crucial as CERN transitions from operational phases to the delivery of major projects between 2026 and 203
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for securing support from governments and funding agencies, reinforcing strategic partnerships, and engaging with key stakeholders. The role demands a high level of strategic thinking and the ability to navigate complex international landscapes to ensure CERN's long-term scientific roadmap is supported and realized.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The main tasks of the Director will include:
  • Strategic Leadership & Policy Engagement: Collaborating with the Directorate for the overall management of CERN, developing stakeholder engagement strategies, and representing CERN in high-level negotiations.
  • Advancing the Next Flagship Project: Leading external engagement efforts for conceptualizing and funding CERN's next major accelerator project, engaging with policymakers and industry leaders.
  • Strengthening Relations with Member States & International Partners: Developing engagement strategies for Member States, overseeing interactions with international organizations, and managing diplomatic relations.
  • Stakeholder Communications & Outreach: Acting as the lead spokesperson for stakeholder relations, leading communication strategies, and enhancing CERN's role in international science diplomacy.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess extensive experience in stakeholder engagement, international relations, and policy development at a senior level. Proven experience in securing political and financial support for large-scale projects is essential, along with a track record of successful negotiations with governments and international organizations. Candidates should demonstrate strong technical competencies in developing vision and strategy, stakeholder influence, and communication strategies.

Educational Background:
A relevant advanced degree in international relations, public policy, or a related field is required. Additional qualifications in science or engineering may be advantageous, given the technical nature of CERN's work.

Experience:
Candidates should have significant experience, ideally over 10 years, in senior roles related to international relations, stakeholder engagement, and policy development within international organizations, research institutions, or government bodies. Experience in managing large-scale scientific projects and engaging with high-level stakeholders is crucial.

Languages:
Excellent spoken and written English is mandatory, with a commitment to learning French. Proficiency in French would be considered an asset, enhancing communication with diverse stakeholders.
