Job Overview: The Genetic Resources Program (GRP) Director at CIMMYT will lead a globally recognized program focused on the conservation, enhancement, and effective utilization of genetic resources. This role requires a visionary leader who can drive innovation in genetic resource management and address both technical and organizational challenges. The Director will be responsible for setting a bold scientific vision, advancing genetic research, and integrating emerging technologies to ensure CIMMYT's leadership in genetic innovation. The position also involves building strategic partnerships and advocating for CIMMYT's research agenda in international forums, thereby influencing policies and collaborations at high levels. The Director will oversee fundraising efforts, mentor a multidisciplinary team, and ensure operational excellence within the program.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Define and execute a forward-thinking strategy for the Genetic Resources Program, ensuring alignment with CIMMYT’s objectives.
Lead cutting-edge research in genetic conservation, trait discovery, and applied genetics to enhance agricultural resilience and productivity.
Integrate data science, biometrics, and quantitative genetics into the program to position CIMMYT as a leader in genetic innovation.
Advocate for CIMMYT’s research agenda in international forums and influence policies and collaborations.
Develop partnerships with CGIAR centers, National Agricultural Research Systems, universities, and private sector players.
Engage with stakeholders to promote CIMMYT’s scientific outputs and enhance research visibility.
Lead fundraising efforts to secure sustainable financial support through grants and partnerships.
Mentor and lead a multidisciplinary team, fostering a high-performance culture.
Oversee budgeting, resource allocation, and compliance with international treaties to ensure responsible research and sustainability.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess 10–15+ years of distinguished leadership experience in senior scientific or executive roles within international research organizations, academia, or industry. A PhD in Plant Science, Genetics, Agronomy, or a related field is required, along with expertise in genetics, plant breeding, or conservation biology. Proven experience in leading and managing complex, multidisciplinary research programs with an international scope is essential. Candidates should have a demonstrated track record of securing funding and managing large-scale research budgets, as well as strong international and developing country experience. Expertise in managing research within international legal frameworks and intellectual property agreements is also necessary. Exceptional relationship management skills and outstanding communication and advocacy skills are critical for this role.
Educational Background: A PhD in Plant Science, Genetics, Agronomy, or a related field is mandatory for this position.
