Job Overview:
The Senior Knowledge Management Officer position is a critical role within the African Union's Mediation and Dialogue Division (MDD), specifically under the Silencing the Guns Unit. This position is designed for a one-year term, including a three-month probation period, and is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The officer will be responsible for documenting, monitoring, and reporting on mediation and dialogue processes, directly reporting to the Head of MDD. The role requires a strategic approach to knowledge management, ensuring that AU-led mediation processes are meticulously documented and analyzed. The officer will also be tasked with developing and implementing knowledge management policies and systems, facilitating collaboration among various stakeholders, and enhancing the capacity of the Knowledge Management function through workshops and initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Knowledge Management Officer will manage the Knowledge Management (KM) strategy and platform for the Mediation and Dialogue Division. Key responsibilities include:
  • Overseeing the documentation of AU-led mediation processes, ensuring accuracy and comprehensiveness.
  • Compiling and analyzing data from interventions and activities of AU member states related to mediation processes.
  • Developing and implementing KM policies and procedures, including the design and management of KM systems and tools.
  • Liaising with other AU organs, RECs/RMs, the UN, and other organizations on knowledge management matters.
  • Coordinating day-to-day project operations and managing team priorities within the Knowledge Management function.
  • Monitoring and analyzing KM networks, tools, and methodologies to support new development opportunities.
  • Conducting research to enhance the Knowledge Management function and stay updated on developments in related fields.
  • Organizing initiatives to strengthen KM capacity through workshops and seminars, fostering collaboration and communities of practice.
  • Drafting and consolidating reports for AU Commission leadership and policy organs. 1
  • Performing any other related responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in business or public administration, management, statistics, economics, political science, or related fields, along with seven years of relevant experience at a specialist or expertise level in program/project management. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree in the aforementioned fields with at least ten years of relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a Master’s degree. Additionally, candidates should have a good comparative knowledge of KM strategies within the AU, RECs/RMs, or the UN, and familiarity with the African Union Agenda 2063 and its flagship project, Silencing the Guns, is advantageous. Previous experience with government, NGOs, or international institutions is also desirable.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree in relevant fields such as business or public administration, management, statistics, economics, or political science. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in these fields may be considered if they have substantial relevant experience. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of program and project management within the context of the African Union's initiatives.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of experience at a specialist or expertise level in program/project management. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree must have at least ten years of relevant experience. Experience in knowledge management strategies, particularly within the AU, RECs/RMs, or the UN, is highly desirable. Familiarity with the African Union's Agenda 2063 and previous work with governmental or international institutions will be considered advantageous.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of additional AU working languages is considered an added advantage, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively within the diverse linguistic landscape of the African Union.

Additional Notes:
The appointment for the Senior Knowledge Management Officer is for a period of one year, with the possibility of renewal. The first three months will serve as a probation period. The position is full-time, and the salary is set at P3 Step 5, inclusive of all allowances for internationally recruited staff.
