Job Overview: The Senior Economist position within the Economics Department at AIIB is pivotal for supporting the bank's policy-based lending initiatives aimed at addressing climate change commitments of its member countries. The role involves working collaboratively within interdepartmental teams to initiate, implement, and monitor climate-focused lending strategies. The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing and designing economic policies, frameworks, and regulations that facilitate investment in climate-related infrastructure. This includes engaging in policy dialogues with country authorities, evaluating macroeconomic and budget frameworks, and contributing to the overall economic sustainability of projects financed by AIIB. The position requires a strong understanding of climate economics and the ability to conduct research that informs policy decisions.
Duties and Responsibilities: The key responsibilities of the Senior Economist include:
Conducting comprehensive country-specific analyses on policies, institutions, and frameworks related to climate change and green infrastructure investment.
Engaging with country authorities to facilitate policy dialogues on climate transition and necessary reforms.
Designing policy measures and parameters for AIIB's policy-based financing, monitoring progress, and conducting post hoc assessments of lending operations.
Supporting the Economics Department in advancing research and thought leadership on climate and environmental issues.
Leading research initiatives that provide new insights into climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.
Contributing to project operations by performing macroeconomic monitoring, cost-benefit analyses, and assessing development impacts of projects.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a postgraduate degree in economics, with a PhD preferred, and have a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in international organizations, investment banks, think tanks, government agencies, or financial institutions. Strong expertise in climate change-related disciplines such as energy economics, environmental economics, sustainable development, and climate finance is essential. Experience in macroeconomic and fiscal policy setting, particularly in relation to policy-based lending, is advantageous. An academic research record in climate economics or relevant publications is a plus. Candidates should also have experience in applied climate policy settings and engaging in country dialogues.
Educational Background: A postgraduate degree in economics is required for this position, with a PhD being highly desirable. The educational background should include a strong focus on climate economics, environmental policy, or related fields that equip the candidate with the necessary analytical skills to assess and design economic policies.
Experience: The position requires a seasoned economist with at least 10 years of relevant experience.
