Job Overview: The Humanitarian Analyst will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of UNFPA's humanitarian activities in Somalia. This position involves assisting with needs assessments, response planning, and coordinating humanitarian interventions. The analyst will conduct rapid assessments and support program monitoring and evaluation, working closely with various units such as Gender Based Violence (GBV), Adolescents and Youth (A&Y), Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), and Population and Development (P&D). The role requires collaboration with field offices in Puntland and Somaliland to provide effective humanitarian aid to those in need, ensuring that UNFPA's mandates are integrated into emergency preparedness and response plans.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Humanitarian Analyst will be responsible for several key areas:
Coordination: Participate in national and sub-national humanitarian coordination meetings, support UNFPA’s internal coordination efforts, and contribute to mapping humanitarian activities to enhance coordination.
Emergency Preparedness and Response: Develop and implement emergency preparedness plans, support inter-agency needs assessments, and ensure timely procurement of necessary kits based on humanitarian needs.
Capacity Building: Enhance the skills of frontline workers through training and workshops, ensuring effective knowledge-sharing on emergency preparedness and response.
Reporting, Documentation, and Communication: Prepare regular reports on humanitarian developments, assist in drafting situation reports, and maintain up-to-date records of emergency responses.
Monitoring and Analysis: Monitor and analyze humanitarian situations, provide early warning information, and support the implementation of humanitarian activities across various sectors.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced degree in population, demography, development studies, public health, or a related social science discipline, along with two years of relevant experience. Professional experience in public health, particularly in program/project management, is essential. Knowledge of the country’s context and government systems related to sexual and reproductive health is desirable, as is practical experience in project design, monitoring, and evaluation. Familiarity with office software and web-based management systems is also required, and experience within the UN system is an added advantage.
Educational Background: An advanced degree in a relevant field such as population, demography, development studies, public health, or other related social sciences is required for this position. Candidates should have a strong academic background that supports their understanding of the complexities involved in humanitarian work and public health.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of two years of professional experience in public health, with a focus on program/project management. Experience in sexual and reproductive health programs is highly desirable, as is familiarity with the local context and government systems. Candidates should have practical experience in designing, monitoring, and evaluating development projects, as well as experience using office software and web-based management systems.
Languages: A solid command of spoken and written English is mandatory, along with proficiency in the Somali language. These language skills are essential for effective communication and collaboration within the humanitarian context in Somalia.
