  • The DCO operates as a stand-alone coordination office within the United Nations Secretariat, focusing on the management and oversight of the resident coordinator system. The office is part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG) and plays a crucial role in ensuring effective coordination among UN entities to achieve sustainable development goals. The DCO is committed to fostering collaboration across various UN departments and entities, particularly in the areas of prevention and peacebuilding, and operates globally to support member states in their development efforts.

Job Overview:
The Development Coordination Officer, Prevention and Peacebuilding, is a pivotal role within the DCO, responsible for providing policy, technical, and operational advice to enhance sustainable development coordination in contexts of prevention and peacebuilding. The incumbent will engage with various UN departments and entities to ensure that peacebuilding policies and tools are effectively integrated into country support initiatives. This position requires a deep understanding of the complexities surrounding conflict prevention and peacebuilding, as well as the ability to forge strategic partnerships across different pillars of the UN system. The officer will also be tasked with producing analytical products that inform and guide the DCO's efforts in promoting humanitarian development and peace collaboration, ensuring that the peacebuilding component is emphasized in all initiatives. The role demands a proactive approach to maintaining relationships with key stakeholders and contributing to the development of capacity-building initiatives that support the UN's mission in sustainable development.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Development Coordination Officer will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including: providing policy and technical support in sustainable development coordination; maintaining partnerships with UN departments focused on peacebuilding; supporting countries in designing their Cooperation Frameworks; producing analytical reports on humanitarian development and peace collaboration; representing the DCO in interagency working groups; engaging with external partners for policy development; leading capacity-building initiatives; preparing policy analysis and option papers; contributing to annual reports; leading complex policy projects; and supervising junior officers. The officer will also be responsible for monitoring developments in the field of peacebuilding and ensuring effective communication and collaboration among various stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a comprehensive set of qualifications, including a strong understanding of humanitarian assistance, emergency relief, and human rights issues. The role requires demonstrated problem-solving skills, the ability to analyze complex issues, and knowledge of the political, economic, and social dimensions of the region or country of assignment. Candidates should also have the ability to negotiate and influence others, work under pressure, and maintain a high level of professionalism. A commitment to gender equality and the ability to incorporate gender perspectives into all areas of work is essential. The ideal candidate will also exhibit strong teamwork skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, social science, public administration, international studies, economics, engineering, earth sciences, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of the role and the various factors influencing peacebuilding and development.

Experience:
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in conflict analysis and post-conflict peacebuilding is required. Additionally, candidates must have at least two years of experience in managing emergency responses to crises and two years of experience in conflict prevention. Experience in peace, development, and humanitarian collaboration is desirable, as is familiarity with the United Nations system or comparable international organizations. Field experience in development cooperation and inter-agency collaboration in the development sector is also beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is desirable, and proficiency in another UN official language is considered an advantage. Fluency is defined as being able to read, speak, write, and understand the language at a high level, while knowledge is defined as being confident in two of the four language skills.
