Job Overview: The ILO internship program offers a unique opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain practical experience in the field of international labor standards and social protection. Interns will engage directly with the ILO's work, contributing to the implementation of its principles, programs, and strategies. The internship is designed to enhance understanding of global labor issues while providing hands-on experience related to the intern's field of study. Interns will work within the Social Protection Department (SOCPRO), which is dedicated to promoting effective and sustainable social protection systems worldwide. This role will involve exposure to various aspects of social protection, including health coverage, social security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security, and the impact of policies on vulnerable populations.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a range of tasks, including but not limited to: collecting and analyzing data relevant to social protection and health; conducting background research and drafting research materials and tools; supporting the formulation and implementation of project components; assisting in the coordination of collaborative work on health social protection among specialists in different locations; and performing any other tasks assigned by the supervisor to support the team working on health social protection. Interns should expect to dedicate 10 to 20% of their time to administrative tasks, ensuring that they contribute effectively to the team's objectives.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet several qualifications to be considered for the internship. They should not have any close relatives working at the ILO, must not have previously interned at the ILO, and must be enrolled in or have completed a Master's or Doctoral program within the past year. A practical knowledge of English, both oral and written, is mandatory. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate adaptability to an international, multicultural, and multilingual environment, possess strong communication skills, and be able to work effectively in a team setting.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes enrollment in or completion of a Master's or Doctoral program in relevant fields such as social policy, health policy, health economics, public health, social protection, development, or other related social sciences. A specialization directly related to health and social protection is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's suitability for the role.
Experience: Candidates should have some level of experience in research, which could include a Master's thesis or a position as a research assistant. Familiarity with research methodologies, including both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, is advantageous. Experience working with developing countries on health access and financing issues would also be beneficial, as it aligns with the ILO's mission to improve social protection systems globally.
Languages: A practical knowledge of English is mandatory for this position. Additionally, proficiency in one of the ILO's other official languages, such as French or Spanish, is considered a plus. Knowledge of other languages may also be beneficial, depending on the specific needs of the department and the projects being undertaken.
Additional Notes: The internship is expected to last between 3 to 6 months, starting on either the 1st or the 15th of the month. Interns will receive a monthly allowance of 2450 CHF, unless they are receiving funding from another institution. If partial funding is received, the ILO will cover the difference to ensure the intern receives the full amount. Interns will also receive an additional 45 CHF per month to contribute towards medical insurance costs during the internship. Candidates from underrepresented or unrepresented member states may be eligible for special funding to cover travel expenses to Geneva. It is important to note that the ILO does not cover any costs related to accidents or illnesses that may occur during the internship, and candidates are responsible for ensuring they have adequate health and accident insurance coverage.
