Job Overview:

Interns will be involved in the work of the ILO, contributing to the application of its principles, programs, and strategies. The internship is designed to enhance understanding of labor issues at the international level while providing hands-on experience related to the intern's field of study. Interns will work closely with the Sectoral Policies Department (SECTOR), specifically within the FACT unit, which focuses on sectors such as agriculture, construction, and tourism. This role will allow interns to engage with various stakeholders, including governments, employers, and workers' organizations, and to contribute to the development of knowledge and advocacy materials that promote decent work across different sectors.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be expected to assist in a variety of tasks that support the objectives of the SECTOR department. Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting in the organization and servicing of international meetings aimed at fostering dialogue among sectoral constituents on emerging labor issues.
  • Conducting research and analysis of sector-specific data to identify trends and challenges within the industrial sectors.
  • Supporting the development and dissemination of knowledge products, including reports and working papers that address key labor issues.
  • Promoting and supporting the implementation of international labor standards, particularly those relevant to specific sectors.
  • Preparing communication and advocacy materials that highlight the importance of decent work in various economic sectors.
  • Assisting in capacity-building efforts for governments and organizations to advance the decent work agenda at the country level.
  • Participating in strategic partnerships with other UN agencies and multilateral organizations to promote policy coherence on sectoral issues.
  • Completing administrative tasks that may take up to 20% of the intern's time.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must meet several qualifications to be considered for the internship. These include:
  • Enrollment in a Master's or Doctorate program, or completion of such a program within the past year.
  • A demonstrated interest in labor issues and challenges related to sectors such as agriculture, construction, and tourism.
  • Proficiency in using standard MS Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Relevant work experience in the aforementioned sectors is advantageous.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should have a strong academic background in fields related to labor studies, social sciences, or international relations. Enrollment in a Master's or Doctorate program is mandatory, or the candidate must have completed such a program within the last year. Previous studies or research focused on labor issues, particularly in sectors like agriculture, construction, and tourism, will be highly regarded.

Experience:
Candidates should possess relevant work experience in sectors such as agriculture, construction, food and beverage, forestry, and tourism. Experience in developing databases and working with programming teams is considered an asset. Interns should also be comfortable using standard office software and have the ability to adapt to a fast-paced, international work environment.

Languages:
A working knowledge of English, both oral and written, is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in other ILO official languages, such as French and Spanish, is considered an asset and will enhance the candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
The internship is expected to last between 3 to 6 months, starting on either the 1st or the 15th of a given month. Interns will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month, with additional contributions towards medical insurance. Candidates from non- or under-represented member states may be eligible for travel cost coverage to Geneva. It is important to note that the ILO does not guarantee employment at the end of the internship, and candidates must apply before the specified deadline.
