Job Overview: The National University UN Volunteer (Interpreter/Translator) will be based at the WHO Country Office in Uzbekistan and will work under the supervision of the WHO Representative, collaborating closely with the WHO Communication Officer and the WHO Administrative Officer. The incumbent will be responsible for translating documents and providing interpretation services, ensuring that translations from English to Uzbek and Russian, and vice versa, are accurate and timely. This role requires a proactive approach in seeking guidance from colleagues, analyzing evidence, and utilizing WHO guidelines. The incumbent will also be expected to engage with technical partners and stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and collaboration in health development initiatives. The position emphasizes the importance of confidentiality and the use of appropriate terminology in translations, as well as the need for the incumbent to travel with WHO staff for field missions when required.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the National University UN Volunteer (Interpreter/Translator) include:
Translating documents from English to Uzbek and Russian and vice versa, ensuring accuracy and proper terminology.
Providing consecutive interpretation services during meetings organized by WHO on various topics.
Conducting terminology research to ensure the appropriateness of translations.
Ensuring the quality and accuracy of documents before submission.
Traveling with WHO staff on missions for interpretation and assistance as needed.
Taking notes during meetings and transcribing from dictation, recordings, and handwritten drafts.
Performing additional duties as required by the WHO Country Office.
Engaging in activities that promote volunteerism and community engagement as part of the UN Volunteers programme.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a strong command of English, Uzbek, and Russian, with proven experience in translation and interpretation. The candidate should demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to continuous learning. Teamwork and respect for diversity are essential, along with strong planning and organizational skills. Flexibility and a genuine commitment to the principles of voluntary engagement are also important.
Educational Background: Candidates must be recently graduated from university or currently enrolled in university. A background in languages, translation, or a related field is preferred, as it will provide the necessary skills for effective communication and translation in a health context.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have prior experience in translation and interpretation, particularly in a professional or volunteer setting. Experience working with international organizations or in health-related fields is advantageous, as it will enhance the candidate's understanding of the terminology and context required for this role.
Languages: Mandatory languages for this position include English, Uzbek, and Russian. Proficiency in these languages is essential for effective communication and translation. Additional languages may be considered an asset but are not required.
Additional Notes: This is a national UN Volunteer assignment, and the volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. The position is categorized under the University category, which means the candidate must be a recent graduate or currently enrolled in university. The volunteer will receive a living allowance of USD 554 per month, a one-time entry lump sum of USD 400, and a travel ticket when moving to the duty station. Additional benefits include medical and life insurance, annual leave, sick leave, learning leave, maternity leave, and paternity leave. The allowances are designed to support a secure standard of living in line with United Nations standards and are not considered compensation for services rendered.
