Job Overview: The National Youth UN Volunteer (Interpreter/Translator) will be based at the WHO Country Office in Uzbekistan. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the WHO Representative and collaborate closely with the WHO Communication Officer and the WHO Administrative Officer. The primary function of this role is to provide translation services, both written and verbal, from English to Uzbek and Russian, and vice versa. The incumbent is expected to take a proactive approach in seeking guidance from colleagues, analyzing evidence, and utilizing WHO guidelines. This position requires maintaining high standards of accuracy and confidentiality in translations, ensuring that the terminology used is appropriate for the context of the documents being translated. The role also involves providing consecutive interpretation during meetings and trainings organized by WHO, thus facilitating effective communication among stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the National Youth UN Volunteer (Interpreter/Translator) include:
Translating documents from English to Uzbek and Russian and vice versa, ensuring accuracy and proper terminology.
Proofreading and editing final translated versions to maintain quality.
Providing consecutive interpretation services during meetings and trainings organized by WHO.
Conducting terminology research to ensure the appropriateness of translations.
Collaborating with the Communications Officer to prepare translations of visibility products.
Ensuring the quality and accuracy of documents before submission.
Traveling with WHO staff for field missions to provide interpretation and assistance.
Responding to queries related to translation and interpretation tasks.
Taking notes during meetings and transcribing dictations and recordings. 1
Performing other duties as required by the WHO Country Office.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for this position include a strong command of English, Uzbek, and Russian, with proven experience in translation and interpretation. The candidate should demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to continuous learning. Additionally, the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and respect for diversity are essential. The candidate should also possess strong planning and organizational skills, as well as flexibility in adapting to changing circumstances.
Educational Background: Candidates should have a relevant educational background in languages, translation, or a related field. A degree or certification in translation or interpretation is preferred, along with demonstrated proficiency in the languages required for the position.
Experience: The position requires prior experience in translation and interpretation, particularly in a professional or organizational context. Experience working with international organizations or in health-related fields is an advantage. The candidate should be able to demonstrate their ability to handle translation tasks efficiently and accurately under tight deadlines.
Languages: Mandatory languages for this position include English, Uzbek, and Russian. Proficiency in all three languages is essential for effective communication and translation. Additional languages may be considered an asset but are not required.
Additional Notes: This is a national UN Volunteer assignment, and the volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. The UN Volunteer entitlements include a monthly living allowance of USD 738, a one-time entry lump sum of USD 400, and a travel ticket when moving to the duty station. Additional benefits include medical and life insurance, annual leave, sick leave, learning leave, maternity leave, and paternity leave. The allowances are designed to support a secure standard of living and are not considered compensation for services rendered. The volunteer is encouraged to engage in community activities and promote the principles of volunteerism throughout their assignment.
