Job Overview:
The Human Rights Officer (Investigator on Sexual and Gender Based Violence) will play a crucial role in investigating allegations of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) within the framework of international human rights law. This position requires a deep understanding of human rights issues, particularly those related to gender-based violence, and the ability to conduct thorough investigations that uphold the dignity and rights of victims. The officer will be responsible for researching, collecting, and analyzing information related to SGBV, conducting interviews with victims and witnesses, and ensuring that investigations are conducted in a manner that prioritizes the safety and confidentiality of all parties involved. The role also involves monitoring trends in SGBV violations and employing various investigative methods to gather evidence and corroborate allegations. The officer will work closely with the Chief of the Investigations Support Section and the Gender Adviser to ensure that gender-sensitive approaches are integrated throughout the investigative process.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Human Rights Officer (Investigator SGBV) will be responsible for a range of duties, including: researching, collecting, and analyzing information related to human rights violations; serving as the lead investigator on SGBV cases; conducting interviews with victims and witnesses; deploying to various locations to support investigations; monitoring trends in SGBV violations; employing mapping tools and open-source materials for geolocation of incidents; identifying alleged perpetrators; organizing missions to sites of violations; ensuring the protection of victims and witnesses; drafting analytical documents and reports; and collaborating with the Gender Adviser to integrate gender perspectives into all aspects of the investigation. The officer will also be expected to perform other related duties as required, demonstrating professionalism and a commitment to human rights.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of human rights issues, particularly in relation to gender equality and SGBV. They should have the ability to identify and analyze human rights problems in their political, ethnic, racial, and socio-economic dimensions. The ideal candidate will have excellent research and analytical skills, with the ability to evaluate and integrate information from various sources. They should demonstrate a commitment to professionalism, efficiency, and integrity in their work, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders. The position requires a strong sense of responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives into all areas of work and ensuring the equal participation of women and men.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. This educational background is essential for understanding the complex legal and social frameworks surrounding human rights and SGBV.

Experience:
Candidates must have a minimum of five years of progressively responsible work experience in human rights, with at least two years specifically focused on conducting human rights investigations. Experience in investigating sexual and gender-based violence is highly desirable, as it is critical for the effective performance of the duties associated with this position. The candidate should demonstrate a track record of successfully managing investigations and working with diverse stakeholders in challenging environments.

Languages:
Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Additionally, fluency in Arabic (both oral and written) is also required, reflecting the need for effective communication in diverse contexts. Knowledge of other languages may be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with various communities and stakeholders.
