The organization operates in over 170 countries and has a workforce of approximately 2,500 employees. The IAEA's Major Programme 2 focuses on 'Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection', which includes various programs aimed at improving food security, human health, and environmental protection through nuclear techniques.
Job Overview: The position of Molecular Geneticist is integral to the Plant Breeding and Genetics Subprogramme within the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications at the IAEA. The primary function of this role is to conduct adaptive research aimed at accelerating the development of superior crop varieties through mutation breeding. The Molecular Geneticist will develop molecular genetics and genomics protocols and products, including molecular markers, to enhance plant mutation breeding for traits of agronomic interest. This role requires collaboration with plant breeders and other technical specialists to ensure the effective implementation of research and development projects that contribute to sustainableagricultural practices.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Molecular Geneticist will be responsible for developing or adapting methodologies for the rapid identification of mutants with improved characteristics, focusing on genotype-based assays such as whole genome sequencing and molecular marker development. Key responsibilities include driving genotypic data analysis, collaborating with plant breeders to derive trait insights, designing genotyping platforms, providing technical guidance to laboratory technicians and students, developing and implementing Coordinated Research Projects, contributing to technology transfer initiatives, preparing internal documents and laboratory guidelines, publishing research results, and assisting in generating extra budgetary funding for research programs. The role also involves undertaking field missions related to project execution and supporting the implementation of subprogramme activities as directed by the Laboratory Head.
