UN-Habitat's historical focus has been on supporting the government in developing urban policies and regulations, strategic urban planning, increasing municipal revenue, establishing community-based organizations, addressing land and housing needs for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees, and providing basic urban services. Currently, the organization emphasizes humanitarian assistance and projects that meet basic human needs, including shelter and sustainable housing solutions, while also addressing climate change impacts and enhancing community resilience.

Job Overview:
The Online Volunteer position involves preparing various outputs over a 10-week period. The primary responsibilities include drafting texts for social media posts, project briefs, and factsheets. The Online Volunteer will work under the guidance of the communication and advocacy focal point, collecting information from project teams to create engaging and informative content. This content aims to raise awareness about UN-Habitat's programs and priorities, targeting both international partners and relevant stakeholders within Afghanistan. The role requires flexibility, as most outputs do not have strict deadlines, allowing for a focus on quality and clarity in communication.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Online Volunteer will be responsible for the following duties:

• Collecting information from project teams to draft communications and advocacy materials.
• Creating news stories for websites and social media posts.
• Drafting texts for project briefs and factsheets.
• Revising and refining drafts based on feedback from the communication and advocacy focal point.
• Ensuring that all content is clear, engaging, and informative.
• Raising awareness about UN-Habitat's programs and priorities among the target audience, which includes international partners and stakeholders in Afghanistan.
• Collaborating with team members to ensure alignment with organizational goals and messaging.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess strong writing and communication skills, with the ability to create engaging content for diverse audiences. Familiarity with social media platforms and experience in drafting advocacy materials are highly desirable. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate an understanding of humanitarian issues and urban development, particularly in the context of Afghanistan. The ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team is essential, as is a commitment to the mission and values of UN-Habitat.

Educational Background:
A background in communications, journalism, international relations, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have a solid understanding of urban development and humanitarian issues, particularly as they relate to Afghanistan. Relevant coursework or training in communication strategies and advocacy is beneficial.

Experience:
While specific prior experience may not be required, candidates should demonstrate familiarity with communication practices and an understanding of the challenges faced in humanitarian contexts. Experience in volunteer roles or internships related to communications, advocacy, or urban development will be considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all communications will be conducted in this language. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Afghanistan, such as Dari or Pashto, is considered a valuable asset but not mandatory.

Additional Notes:
This position is a volunteer role for a duration of 10 weeks. It is not a full-time position, and the Online Volunteer will have flexibility in managing their time and outputs. The role is open to individuals interested in contributing to humanitarian efforts and gaining experience in communications within an international organization.
