Job Overview:
The Economic Development Internship at the Air Transport Bureau (ATB) is designed for individuals who are keen to gain practical experience in the field of economic regulation and policy related to air transport. The intern will support the Economic Regulatory Framework Section (ERF) in its mission to enhance the economic development of air transport. This role involves engaging with various stakeholders, analyzing air services agreements, and contributing to the development of tools that facilitate the exchange of information on economic regulatory matters. The intern will also assist in organizing air transport-related events and preparing documentation for significant ICAO meetings, such as the ICAO Assembly. This internship provides a unique opportunity to work closely with experienced professionals in the aviation sector and gain insights into the regulatory frameworks that govern international air transport.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
  • Contributing to the development of tools that foster the exchange of information on economic regulatory matters, in collaboration with the Aviation Data and Analysis Section and Information and Communication Technology Section.
  • Analyzing air services agreements to identify trends in liberalization and regulatory practices.
  • Assisting in the preparation of documentation for the 42nd Session of the ICAO Assembly, ensuring that all materials are accurate and comprehensive.
  • Supporting specific projects related to air transport regulatory issues by preparing necessary documentation and conducting research.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by the Chief of the ERF Section, which may include attending meetings, taking notes, and providing administrative support.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong analytical skills and a keen interest in economic regulation and policy. They should be able to work collaboratively in a team environment and demonstrate effective communication skills. Proficiency in research methodologies and data analysis is essential, as well as the ability to synthesize complex information into clear and concise reports. Additionally, candidates should be adaptable and willing to take on various tasks as needed to support the ERF Section's objectives.

Educational Background:
Candidates are required to have completed or be enrolled in a graduate degree program (second-level university degree or higher) in a field related to economics, law, commerce, and/or public or business administration. For applicants from educational systems where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, completion of at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards a degree is required.

Experience:
While prior work experience is not mandatory, any relevant internships or academic projects related to economic policy, regulation, or aviation will be considered an asset. The internship is designed for individuals who are currently pursuing or have recently completed their graduate studies, providing them with an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting.

Languages:
Fluent reading, writing, and speaking abilities in English are essential for this position. Additionally, a working knowledge of a second language of the Organization, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish, is desirable and will enhance the candidate's profile.

Additional Notes:
This internship is unpaid, and all costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by the intern. The duration of the internship ranges from two to six months, with the expectation that the intern will work five days a week on a full-time basis. Interns are not permitted to engage in any other form of employment within ICAO during their internship and are ineligible to apply for or be appointed to any post in the Secretariat or contracted for any other remunerated employment with ICAO for six months following the end of their internship. Candidates may need to obtain a work permit to intern in Canada.
