Job Overview:
The Senior Programme Coordinator will lead the Global Programme on Crimes that Affect the Environment, which focuses on various environmental crimes including illegal trafficking of wildlife, illegal logging, and crimes in the fisheries and minerals sectors. The incumbent will be responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of UNODC's policies and programs in these areas. This role requires a strategic approach to managing and directing programs, ensuring that they align with the organization's goals and effectively address the needs of Member States. The coordinator will also provide expert advice to government officials and stakeholders, ensuring that best practices are shared and implemented. The position demands a proactive approach to identifying emerging issues and trends in environmental crime, and the ability to adapt strategies accordingly. The incumbent will also be responsible for overseeing the preparation of reports and other written outputs, ensuring that they meet the high standards expected by UNODC and its partners.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Programme Coordinator will have a wide range of responsibilities including: leading the development and implementation of the Global Programme on Crimes that Affect the Environment; managing and directing program strategies and projects; providing technical input and establishing work plans; representing UNODC in various forums and providing expert advice; conducting strategic reviews and risk analyses; leading collaborative efforts with international partners; collecting and analyzing data to inform decision-making; planning and conducting training and consultative meetings; overseeing the preparation of reports and other written outputs; developing resource mobilization strategies; promoting initiatives and outreach activities; monitoring program budgets and expenditures; ensuring integration of human rights and gender policies; overseeing recruitment and development of personnel; and leading field missions.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in international development, crime prevention, and environmental issues. They should have demonstrated knowledge of UNODC's mandates and best practices in program development and execution. The ability to provide specialized advice and negotiate effectively is essential. Candidates should also have strong analytical skills and the ability to conduct independent research. Leadership skills are crucial, as the incumbent will be responsible for managing teams and ensuring effective collaboration across various stakeholders.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business administration, economics, international relations, law, social science, political science, public administration, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible professional experience in an international environment is required. This experience should include developing, managing, and implementing technical assistance programs relevant to UNODC's mandates. Candidates should have experience leading and managing teams in a regional or global context, as well as solid experience in field-based project implementation and monitoring. Experience with UNODC or similar international organizations is desirable, particularly in relation to environmental crimes and wildlife trafficking.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another UN official language, such as French, is considered an advantage and may enhance a candidate's application.

This is a project post with an initial appointment for one year. The position is classified as a family duty station in Nairobi, which is categorized as a B category location.
