Job Overview: The intern will work under the guidance of the Advisor for cities and local government within the UN SDG Action Campaign. The role involves supporting knowledge generation on local actions towards the SDGs, which includes conducting research to identify cities and local governments that are making significant contributions to the SDGs. The intern will also assist in creating and sharing knowledge through various networks and communities of practice, facilitating learning among teams and partners. Communication tasks will be a significant part of the role, including writing press releases, creating social media content, and organizing events to promote UNDP's work. The intern is expected to bring creativity and innovation to the role, providing new ideas on engaging local governments in knowledge and learning initiatives. Additionally, the intern will work on data visualization projects to illustrate how cities are implementing the SDGs, which is a priority for UNDP Local Action.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Support knowledge generation on SDG local action by conducting research to identify cities and local governments contributing to the SDGs, creating and sharing knowledge through networks, assisting with communication tasks, and providing innovative ideas for engaging local governments.
Support communications by generating news stories and other communication assets for the project website and elaborating the project newsletter while expanding the database of local and regional government contacts.
Assist UNDP activities during the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in 2025, including supporting the delegation of local and regional governments and contributing to the 8th Local and Regional Governments Forum on July 16, 2025.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the UN's mission and values, possess relevant experience in media events or social media campaigns, and exhibit strong oral and written communication skills in English. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and online collaborative tools is essential. The ideal candidate should be proactive, organized, self-motivated, honest, confident, responsible, detail-oriented, patient, and skilled in communication. A willingness to learn and share new perspectives with the team is also important.
Educational Background: Candidates should have a major in international relations, social sciences, journalism, communications, marketing, or other relevant fields. They must meet one of the following educational requirements: be enrolled in a Master's or PhD program, be in the final year of a Bachelor’s program, or be within one year after graduation from a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD program. Alternatively, candidates may be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program.
Experience: The position requires good oral and written communication skills in English. Additional skills applicable to online and offline communications, such as graphic design, photo editing, or WeChat layout, will be considered an asset. Experience studying abroad is also advantageous. Candidates should have an interest in local and regional government initiatives and their role in achieving global agendas like the 2030 Agenda. Familiarity with simple design tools, such as Canva, is beneficial.
Languages: The mandatory language for this position is English, with strong oral and written communication skills required. Additional languages may be beneficial but are not specified as mandatory.
Additional Notes: Interns must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan and a medical certificate of good health before starting the internship. Any costs arising from accidents or illnesses during the internship will be the intern's responsibility. The internship stipend will be paid monthly, and interns are entitled to 1.5 days of leave per month. Interns are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station. All costs related to travel, visas, accommodations, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution. Interns must not apply for or be appointed to a position that should be filled by a staff member during the internship. The internship is designed to complement the intern's studies and does not guarantee employment within the UN System.
