Job Overview: The National UN Volunteer Specialist will play a pivotal role in supporting the Environmental Damage Assessment project, which aims to assist the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine in developing necessary legislation and practical mechanisms for recording evidence of environmental damage caused by the ongoing military invasion. This position is crucial for addressing the emergency needs for recovery actions and providing external support from international partners. The specialist will be responsible for raising awareness about environmental damage, enhancing accessibility to diverse audiences, and promoting gender-responsive assessments through various community engagement activities. The role involves organizing offline and online events, trainings, and workshops, and utilizing social media and other communication tools to promote these initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Public Engagement: Develop and implement strategies to engage the general public and key stakeholders in discussions and actions related to promoting gender-responsive environmental damage assessment on both national and community levels.
Community Outreach: Collaborate with local communities, NGOs, and other organizations to foster cooperation in addressing environmental damage and promoting sustainability.
Capacity Building: Organize educational programs, trainings, workshops, and accelerators to enhance the knowledge and skills of community members and stakeholders.
Data Analysis: Collect and analyze data related to public engagement efforts, utilizing key performance indicators to measure the effectiveness of outreach activities.
Collaboration: Work closely with the project team and relevant partners to ensure a coordinated and coherent approach to outreach activities, ensuring that all efforts align with the project's goals and objectives.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to engage diverse audiences effectively. Experience in community outreach, public engagement, and capacity building is essential. The ideal candidate should demonstrate creativity and adaptability in developing strategies for promoting environmental awareness and sustainability. A strong understanding of gender-responsive approaches in environmental assessments is highly desirable, along with the ability to analyze data and measure the impact of outreach initiatives.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in environmental science, social sciences, communications, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in community engagement, environmental policy, or related areas will be considered an asset. Candidates should have a solid understanding of environmental issues, particularly in the context of Ukraine, and familiarity with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is preferred.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in community engagement, public outreach, or environmental advocacy. Experience working with governmental or non-governmental organizations in Ukraine or similar contexts is highly advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate a track record of successfully organizing events, workshops, and training sessions that engage diverse stakeholders and promote environmental awareness.
Languages: Fluency in Ukrainian and English is mandatory. Proficiency in additional languages, particularly Russian, is considered a strong asset, as it will enhance communication with a broader audience and facilitate engagement with various community groups.
Additional Notes: This is a full-time contract position with a duration specified in the vacancy announcement, subject to extensions based on funding availability, operational necessity, and satisfactory performance. The role includes a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) of USD 1587 per month, along with a one-time entry lump sum of USD 400 and an exit allowance of USD 101.78 for each month served. Medical and life insurance coverage is provided for the duration of the assignment, and volunteers are entitled to annual leave, learning leave, and sick leave as per the organization's policies.
