Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was established in 1972 and has since become the global authority on environmental matters. UNEP is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, and operates through various divisions, regional offices, and a network of collaborating centers across multiple countries.

Job Overview:
This position is part of UNEP’s project aimed at enhancing national, regional, and global indicator frameworks and environmental economic accounting related to climate change and disaster statistics. The project runs from 2024 to 2027 and focuses on providing scientific information to help countries meet their transparency and reporting obligations regarding climate change. The UNV will work to increase understanding of climate-change and disaster-related statistics in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly through the development of digital products that support national reporting on the Sendai Framework in countries such as Togo, Kenya, Burundi, Cameroon, and Ethiopia. The role involves engaging with a Community of Practice and enhancing visibility for the project.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The UNV will be responsible for several key activities, including:
  • Digitalizing a self-assessment tool for countries to analyze data availability and identify gaps in disaster-related statistics.
  • Creating a digital toolkit to support the implementation of a roadmap aimed at enhancing reporting in sub-Saharan Africa by 2030, including sustainability recommendations for government reporting efforts.
  • Engaging with regional and national partners, including UN agencies and academia, to foster collaboration.
  • Preparing communication materials such as flyers and social media content to promote the project.
  • Updating the UNEP SDG portal with relevant project information. The UNV will work under the supervision of the Programme Management Offices from the SDG and Environment Statistics Unit of UNEP.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess strong planning and organizational skills, the ability to work effectively in teams, and a creative mindset for developing new programs and solutions. Technological awareness is also crucial, as the role involves using and evaluating new technology to support key tasks. The UNV should be adaptable to changing circumstances and able to prioritize work efficiently.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is required, ideally in environmental science, statistics, data management, or a related field. Candidates should have a solid understanding of climate change issues and disaster risk reduction frameworks, particularly in the context of sub-Saharan Africa.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have experience in data analysis, project management, and working with statistical systems. Familiarity with climate change and disaster-related statistics is highly desirable, as is experience in engaging with governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, and knowledge of additional languages relevant to the region, such as French or Swahili, would be advantageous.
