Job Overview: The Communication Intern position is part of the internship-programme" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Internship Programme of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, specifically within the Regional Integration and Trade Division (RITD). The intern will play a crucial role in supporting the division's communication efforts, which include disseminating research and knowledge products to stakeholders. The intern will work closely with the communication focal person and collaborate with colleagues across RITD to ensure effective communication of the division's work. This internship is designed to provide valuable experience in communication strategies, research dissemination, and stakeholder engagement, while also contributing to the overall mission of promoting regional cooperation and integration in Africa.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks aimed at enhancing the visibility and outreach of RITD's work. Key responsibilities include:
Assisting in the development of communication materials such as policy briefs, reports, and infographics by extracting key messages from RITD's knowledge products.
Supporting the drafting of social media content, newsletters, and web articles to improve RITD's outreach.
Reviewing and editing reports and policy documents to ensure clarity and accessibility for diverse audiences.
Assisting in organizing webinars, workshops, and events by preparing communication materials and post-event summaries.
Assisting in updating and maintaining ATPC's digital platforms, including its website and social media channels.
Conducting research on best practices in communication and knowledge dissemination to enhance RITD's outreach strategies.
Performing other communication-related tasks as required.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the United Nations Secretariat Internship Programme, applicants must meet specific criteria:
They must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship. Alternatively, applicants pursuing studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages must have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
Undergraduates, such as those pursuing a Bachelor's degree, are not eligible to apply. While professional work experience is not required, specialized experience in various professional fields is considered an asset.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes enrollment in a graduate degree programme or completion of at least four years of full-time university studies. This ensures that the intern possesses the necessary academic foundation to engage with the complex issues related to regional integration and trade in Africa. The internship is designed for individuals who are actively pursuing advanced studies and are looking to gain practical experience in a professional setting.
Experience: The level of experience needed for this position is minimal, as applicants are not required to have professional work experience to participate in the internship programme. However, any specialized experience in relevant fields such as communication, international relations, or economic development will be considered an asset, enhancing the applicant's suitability for the role.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English and/or French is required for the Internship Programme, as these are the working languages of the United Nations. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance the intern's ability to communicate effectively within the organization.
Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid, and all costs related to travel, accommodation, and living expenses must be covered by the intern or their sponsoring institution. Interns are not guaranteed employment within the UN after the internship, and they must be residents of Addis Ababa. Additionally, interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Ethiopia may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization before starting the internship. The internship is expected to last for six months, providing a structured opportunity for professional development and engagement with the UN's mission.
