Job Overview:
The UN Volunteer will work under the supervision of the Strategic Communications and Advocacy Specialist, collaborating closely with the Regional Innovation Specialist and Management Performance Unit. The role involves identifying and interpreting signals and trends relevant to UNDP's mission, particularly in the Pacific region. The successful candidate will support the scanning of political, economic, social, technological, and environmental signals, contributing to the understanding of emerging trends and insights. The position also entails supporting the dissemination of the Pasifika Futures Report, engaging with stakeholders, and contributing to the planning of the 2025 Pacific Futures Forum. The volunteer will play a crucial role in mainstreaming foresight and inclusion across UNDP programming, strengthening partnerships with disability and LGBTQI organizations, and documenting best practices in these areas. Additionally, the volunteer will assist in strategic initiatives related to policy innovation and digital transformation, utilizing various methodologies to enhance UNDP's decision-making processes.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Identify and interpret signals and trends: Support the scanning and consolidation of signals of change relevant to UNDP’s mission, including political, economic, social, technological, and environmental factors. Conduct weekly scans for signals across various Pacific countries and themes, researching significant background information. Facilitate weekly Scanner Squad meetings to discuss insights and their productive applications. Produce Horizon Scans on key topics and develop policy briefs focused on inclusion based on the lived experiences of Pacific peoples.
  • Support UNDP Pacific Futures Practice: Assist in disseminating the Pasifika Futures Report and ensure effective stakeholder engagement. Contribute to the planning and coordination of the 2025 Pacific Futures Forum, including logistical support and content development. Gather insights for futures and foresight initiatives and identify opportunities for integration into UNDP programming.
  • Mainstream foresight and inclusion: Strengthen partnerships with disability and LGBTQI organizations and support the development of strategic initiatives promoting inclusion across UNDP’s programs. Prepare background documents, reports, and briefing materials for stakeholder engagement in futures and inclusion. Document best practices and lessons learned in these areas.
  • Support strategic big bets, policy innovation, and digital transformation: Utilize futures and design methodologies to integrate foresight into UNDP decision-making. Design and deliver effective communications on futures and foresight, including training for UNDP staff. Contribute to reports, blogs, and resources on foresight for UNDP.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and trends. Excellent communication skills are essential, as the role involves engaging with diverse stakeholders and presenting findings effectively. The ideal candidate should demonstrate adaptability and flexibility, with a commitment to continuous learning and knowledge sharing. A strong understanding of inclusion and diversity issues, particularly concerning disability and LGBTQI communities, is crucial. The ability to work collaboratively in a team environment while also being self-motivated is important for success in this role.

Educational Background:
A degree in social sciences, international development, public policy, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in areas such as foresight, strategic planning, or inclusion practices would be advantageous. Candidates should have a solid understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals and the challenges faced by Pacific Island nations.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in areas such as strategic communications, policy analysis, or program management. Experience working with marginalized communities, particularly persons with disabilities, is highly desirable. Familiarity with foresight methodologies and their application in development contexts will be beneficial. Previous experience in international organizations or NGOs is a plus.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within UNDP and in Fiji. Knowledge of Fijian or Hindi would be considered an asset, as it may facilitate engagement with local communities and stakeholders.
