Job Posting Organization:
The Technical Services Unit (TSU) is a part of UNOPS, which engages in multidisciplinary design and design review, assessments, and advisory work for infrastructure-related projects. Established to support various UN initiatives, the TSU comprises approximately 20 permanent and over 60 retainer personnel, including a diverse range of specialists such as architects, civil engineers, and quantity surveyors. The unit operates in multiple countries across Africa, including Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Morocco, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, and Madagascar, focusing on both horizontal and vertical infrastructure projects. The TSU is based in Nairobi but collaborates extensively with consultants and stakeholders across the continent, addressing broader issues within the built environment, including design peer reviews and infrastructure carbon assessments.

Job Overview:
The Heritage Specialist position is integral to the Technical Services Unit (TSU) at UNOPS, focusing on conservation and restoration projects. The role involves reviewing documents and policies from conservation and heritage centers, advising design and project management teams, and leading communication with heritage bodies. The specialist will prepare concept design proposals and documentation for conservation projects, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards. The position requires site assessments and collaboration with other disciplines to deliver coherent technical packages. The Heritage Specialist will play a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage through effective project management and design oversight, contributing to sustainable development goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Heritage Specialist will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including: reviewing and advising on documents and policies from conservation and heritage centers; leading liaison efforts with heritage bodies and stakeholders; preparing concept design proposals for conservation and restoration projects; developing design documentation in compliance with relevant codes and standards; revising documentation as necessary; conducting site assessments and preparing reports; attending coordination meetings; and collaborating with other disciplines to ensure the delivery of comprehensive technical information packages. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and effective communication with various stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (e.g., Masters) in Heritage/Conservation Architecture or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (e.g., Bachelor) combined with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted. Professional registration with a recognized institution is also required. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of conservation principles and practices, as well as the ability to navigate complex project environments.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree in Heritage/Conservation Architecture or a related subject is mandatory. A first-level university degree may be accepted if accompanied by sufficient relevant experience. Professional registration with a recognized institution is essential for this role, ensuring that the candidate meets the professional standards required in the field of heritage conservation.

Experience:
A minimum of 7 years of experience in conservation architectural design is required. Candidates should have a proven track record in the restoration of heritage buildings and sites, with experience in vernacular architecture approaches being a distinct advantage, particularly in the African context. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, or REVIT is desired, along with proficiency in Google Suite applications, which will enhance the candidate's ability to manage projects effectively.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication within the organization and for project documentation. Additional language skills may be beneficial but are not explicitly required.

Additional Notes:
The position is offered as a Local Individual Contractor Agreement (LICA) Retainer Contract at level LICA 10/ICS 10, with an initial duration of one year, subject to renewal based on performance and funding availability. The retainer contract specifies a unit price per day worked, with payment made only upon completion of work.
