Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s largest operational actor for development issues, established to assist developing countries in achieving sustainable human development. UNDP focuses on four main areas: poverty reduction, democratic governance, environment and energy, and crisis prevention and recovery. The organization integrates cross-cutting issues such as HIV/AIDS and gender equality into its operations. UNDP also coordinates the operational activities of all UN agencies in a country through the resident coordinator system and monitors the Millennium Development Goals at the country level. Additionally, UNDP publishes the Human Development Report annually, which provides insights into development topics and includes the Human Development Index (HDI).

Job Overview:
The primary objective of this position is to enhance the English language proficiency of UNDP volunteers and staff in Comoros through innovative online English courses. The role involves developing a comprehensive curriculum that addresses the specific needs of the participants, who predominantly speak French. The volunteer will be responsible for creating engaging materials and strategies that facilitate learning in all four language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This initiative aims to empower staff members by improving their English communication skills, which is essential for their professional development and effective participation in international contexts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop a detailed lesson plan based on a prior assessment of the staff's English language skills.
  • Conduct English language classes that cover all essential skills: listening, speaking, writing, and reading.
  • Create innovative teaching materials and strategies that cater to the learning styles of the participants.
  • Monitor and evaluate the progress of participants throughout the course duration.
  • Administer a final assessment test at the end of the 12-week course to evaluate the improvement in participants' English proficiency.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations for further learning opportunities based on the assessment results.
  • Collaborate with UNDP staff to ensure the training aligns with organizational goals and needs.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should possess strong English language skills, both written and spoken, with the ability to teach effectively. Experience in teaching English as a second language (ESL) or a related field is highly desirable. The candidate should demonstrate creativity in lesson planning and the ability to engage learners in an online environment. Familiarity with various teaching methodologies and tools for online education is essential. Additionally, the candidate should have excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in English, Education, Linguistics, or a related field is preferred. Candidates with certifications in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) will be given priority. A strong academic background in language studies or pedagogy will be advantageous.

Experience:
Candidates should have prior experience in teaching English, particularly in an online format. Experience working with adult learners or in a multicultural environment is beneficial. The role requires a minimum of 1-2 years of teaching experience, although less experienced candidates with strong qualifications may also be considered.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as the role involves teaching the language. Proficiency in French is also important, as it will facilitate communication with the participants who primarily speak French. Knowledge of other languages may be considered an asset but is not required.

Additional Notes:
This is a volunteer position, and the duration of the contract is expected to be 12 weeks. The role is part-time and can be conducted remotely. The volunteer will not receive financial compensation but may gain valuable experience and skills in teaching and international development. UNDP encourages applications from individuals who are passionate about education and language development.
