Job Overview: The Fishery Officer (Management) plays a crucial role in supporting the implementation of policies and work programmes aimed at developing sustainable fisheries management tools in Mediterranean and Black Sea countries. This position requires comprehensive technical and policy expertise to assist in the planning, development, and execution of divisional programmes, projects, products, and services aligned with the FAO Strategic Framework. The officer will report to the Senior Fishery Officer and collaborate with various staff members within the GFCM Secretariat, contributing to the overall objectives of the organization. The role involves engaging in multidisciplinary teams, leading initiatives, and providing specialized expertise in technical networks and international policy settings. The Fishery Officer will also be responsible for designing and conducting research, data collection, and analysis to support the development of technical standards and innovative strategies for fisheries management.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Fishery Officer (Management) will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, including:
Planning and leading components of multidisciplinary teams and participating in Organization-wide committees and working groups.
Developing technical, analytical, monitoring, and reporting frameworks to support the planning and implementation of work programmes.
Conducting research and data collection to support the development of technical standards and policy proposals.
Responding to country requests for technical assistance and providing solutions to decentralized offices.
Participating in resource mobilization activities in line with the FAO Strategic Framework.
Coordinating the implementation of GFCM activities related to fisheries management and supporting the work of subregional committees.
Leading expert meetings and overseeing the preparation and implementation of GFCM workplans and strategies. 1
Engaging fishers in participatory management processes and organizing training courses and expert groups.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in marine biology, biological sciences, marine sciences, or a related field. Additionally, they should have a minimum of seven years of relevant experience in quantitative analysis and the design, monitoring, and assessment of fisheries management measures, particularly for small-scale fisheries. Proficiency in English (level C) and intermediate knowledge of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is also required. Candidates should demonstrate competencies in results focus, teamwork, communication, building effective relationships, and knowledge sharing.
Educational Background: The position requires an advanced university degree in marine biology, biological sciences, marine sciences, or a related field. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of fisheries management and the ecological aspects of marine resources.
Experience: Candidates should have at least seven years of relevant experience in the field of fisheries management, particularly in quantitative analysis and the design and assessment of management measures.
