Job Overview: The Public Information Officer position is located within the Ecosystem Division at the Coordinating Unit for the Mediterranean Action Plan - Barcelona Convention Secretariat (MAP) in Athens. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Deputy Coordinator, MAP Athens, and will be responsible for developing and implementing information programs that publicize priority issues, major events, and accomplishments of the MAP Barcelona Convention system. This role involves drafting information strategies, monitoring progress, and analyzing outcomes to ensure effective communication with key constituencies. The officer will also be tasked with promoting media coverage of significant events, coordinating press conferences, and maintaining professional relationships with various stakeholders, including media representatives and governmental officials. Additionally, the officer will oversee the production of communication products and manage the information architecture of the MAP Barcelona Convention Secretariat's websites, ensuring that content is accurate and up-to-date. The position requires a proactive approach to communication and a commitment to enhancing the visibility of the MAP's initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop and implement information programs to publicize priority issues and major events related to the MAP Barcelona Convention system.
Monitor and analyze current events and public opinion to advise management on appropriate responses.
Coordinate media coverage of priority issues, including press conferences and interviews.
Produce or oversee the production of various communication products such as press kits, press releases, and social media content.
Establish and maintain professional relationships with key partners and stakeholders.
Plan and coordinate the production of publications for the MAP Barcelona Convention Secretariat.
Prepare drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in UN publications.
Develop and maintain a centralized MAP Library network.
Ensure quality control over website content and manage information architecture. 1

Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong understanding of biodiversity and sustainable development goals, with the ability to analyze and resolve issues effectively. They should demonstrate professionalism, including the ability to conduct independent research and manage conflicting priorities. The role requires excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to tailor messages to different audiences. Candidates should also exhibit strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to develop clear goals and allocate resources efficiently.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, public relations, environmental sciences, international relations, business or public administration, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Successful completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is desirable.
Experience: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, or public administration is required. Relevant experience in the Mediterranean region, particularly at a regional or intergovernmental level, is desirable. Candidates should also have experience in communication or information roles at the international level, with at least two years of experience in data analytics or a related area being advantageous.
Languages: Fluency in English and French is required, as these are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. Knowledge of other UN Mediterranean languages is desirable. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas: speaking, reading, writing, and understanding, while 'knowledge of' indicates a rating of 'confident' in two of the four areas.
Additional Notes: This position is initially for a period of one year, with the possibility of extension based on the availability of funds and the extension of the mandate.
