Job Overview:
The Geospatial Data Analysis Intern will play a crucial role in supporting the Data and Analytics Unit (DAU) of UN-Habitat. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about urban dynamics and data analysis. The intern will engage in various tasks that include data collection, geospatial analysis, and the development of interactive dashboards. The intern will work under the supervision of experienced professionals in the field, gaining valuable insights into the integration of geospatial data and urban planning. This internship offers an opportunity to contribute to significant projects that aim to improve urban knowledge and support sustainable development goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a range of tasks including:
  • Data Collection and Processing: Collecting, cleaning, and preprocessing spatial datasets related to urban dynamics such as demographics, housing, land use, and transportation.
  • Geospatial Analysis and Visualization: Supporting spatial analyses and creating thematic maps to illustrate trends in urban growth and infrastructure dynamics.
  • Workflow Automation: Assisting in the development and refinement of Python scripts to automate data processing and mapping workflows.
  • Dashboard and Interactive Map Development: Designing and implementing interactive dashboards and web maps to present urban dynamics insights.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Documenting all workflows, methods, and processes to ensure transparency and reproducibility of analyses.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in a graduate school program, be in the final year of a first university degree program, or have graduated with a relevant degree. Candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications, particularly Microsoft Office Suite. A strong interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals are essential. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should have a background in Geography, geospatial science, remote sensing, urban planning, or a closely related field. Applicants must be either students in their final year of a bachelor's degree, master's, or Ph.D. program, or have completed such programs. Proficiency in GIS and remote sensing tools is required, along with familiarity with programming skills relevant to GIS and geostatistical workflows.

Experience:
While professional work experience is not required for this internship, candidates should have a strong academic background in a field related to the internship. The focus is on candidates who are currently studying or have recently completed their studies in relevant disciplines.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is required for this internship position. Knowledge of another UN language, such as French, is desirable but not mandatory.
