Job Overview: The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is located in the Coordination Office of the Regional Programme Division (RPD/CO) at the UN-Habitat headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. The intern will play a crucial role in supporting the RPD by maintaining comprehensive data, conducting analyses of donor information, and improving data management processes. The intern will also assist in designing and maintaining an archiving system for information and correspondence. This internship is designed to provide practical experience in data analysis and information management within a UN context, contributing to the overall mission of UN-Habitat. The internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment, with interns expected to work five days a week under the supervision of a staff member.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern's daily responsibilities will vary based on their background and the assigned office. Under the supervision of the Director of the Regional Programme Division (RPD), the intern will be responsible for:
Regularly updating the database supporting the Donor Information Platform (DIP), ensuring data accuracy and integrating new information from various platforms.
Supporting the cleaning and structuring of organizational data related to projects to ensure seamless integration into tools.
Contributing to the continuous improvement of existing DIP tools by identifying additional user needs and proposing tailored solutions.
Automating manual processes for the team and the organization using Power Automate or Python scripting, including developing workflows for repetitive tasks and creating tools to streamline data extraction, analysis, and document generation processes.
Designing and developing Power BI dashboards that integrate advanced data analysis, actionable insights, and impactful visualizations to meet analytical requirements and support organizational decision-making needs.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with a Bachelor's degree, Master's, PhD, or equivalent. Additionally, applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications, particularly the Microsoft Office Suite. A demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter are essential. Candidates should also have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes being a student in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or being enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. Programme, or having completed a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. Programme. Preferred areas of study include computer science, data analytics, software development, information management, data science, or statistics, or other related fields. Applicants must provide proof of their educational status at the time of application.
Experience: While applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, they must have a field of study closely related to the internship type they are applying for. Experience in acquiring, validating, cleaning, transforming, and comparing quantitative and qualitative data from different sources is required. Candidates should provide examples of how they have successfully carried out such tasks in their academic or professional experience. Additionally, experience in designing and implementing interactive data visualization solutions is required, and candidates should describe the tools used (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) and the outcomes of their work. Knowledge and skills in automating data-related processes using tools like Python and Power Automate are desirable, and candidates should provide examples of any automation tasks or projects they have undertaken.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is required for this internship position, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another UN language is considered desirable and may enhance the candidate's application.
