Job Overview: The Medical Entomologist will play a crucial role in supporting Member States in the planning and application of area-wide pest management (AW-IPM) programmes. This position involves integrating the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) with other pest control methods to manage human disease vectors effectively. The Medical Entomologist will provide managerial and technical advice, facilitate technology transfer, and contribute to policy development in the field of human disease vectors. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders and the ability to manage complex projects aimed at sustainable pest management.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Medical Entomologist will be responsible for providing technical and strategic advice to FAO and IAEA Member States, conducting feasibility studies, and designing pilot projects for the sustainable management of disease vectors. This includes undertaking field missions, selecting and briefing consultants, and monitoring project progress. The role also involves organizing training courses and workshops to enhance technical capacity in Member States, contributing to policy development through analytical studies, and ensuring the visibility of the Insect Pest Control Section's activities. Additionally, the Medical Entomologist will manage coordinated research projects, publish scientific results, and act as the focal point for all delegated projects, ensuring efficient resource utilization and coordination with stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's Degree in medical entomology, biology, or a related field, with a strong emphasis on entomology. An advanced university degree in a relevant field is considered an asset. A minimum of five years of applied experience in developing, planning, implementing, and evaluating SIT and related techniques is required. Experience in an international setting, particularly in developing countries, is highly desirable. Candidates should have a proven ability to manage complex insect pest control projects and demonstrate experience in coordinating multidisciplinary teams. Familiarity with FAO and IAEA mechanisms and procedures is advantageous.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's Degree in medical entomology, biology, or a closely related field. An advanced degree in medical entomology or a related discipline would be beneficial. The emphasis on entomology is crucial for understanding the complexities of insect pest control and management.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience in the field of medical entomology, particularly in the application of SIT and related techniques. Candidates should have experience in developing and implementing area-wide pest management programmes and should be comfortable working in international and multicultural environments. Practical field experience in transferring technologies related to SIT is essential, as is a proven track record of managing operational programmes focused on human disease vectors.
Languages: Excellent oral and written command of English is mandatory. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered an asset and would enhance a candidate's profile.
Additional Notes: The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package, including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $64,121, along with a variable post adjustment currently amounting to US $37,44
