Job Overview: The Senior Coordinator will play a pivotal role in overseeing the transition of the UN Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) to the UN Country Team (UNCT). This involves providing strategic guidance to the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) and the UNCT, ensuring effective support for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The incumbent will be responsible for connecting humanitarian, development, political, and peacebuilding efforts, thereby fostering coherence across various initiatives. The role requires managing multiple units within the Integrated Office, ensuring that all outputs meet required standards and deadlines. The Senior Coordinator will also be tasked with establishing partnerships and mobilizing resources for UN efforts in Somalia, as well as managing the operations of the Integrated Office, including budget preparation and staff performance evaluations.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Coordinator will support the DSRSG/RC/HC and the UNCT in the transition of UN functions, ensuring effective capacity building and integration of efforts. Responsibilities include leading strategic guidance for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, coordinating reports, connecting various efforts across sectors, managing the work program of the Integrated Office, approving and drafting reports for stakeholders, establishing partnerships, and overseeing business improvements. The role also involves managing over 40 staff across multiple duty stations, ensuring efficient operations, organizing meetings, and representing the UN at various forums. The incumbent will perform additional duties as required, demonstrating leadership and professionalism throughout.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in fields such as political affairs, international relations, conflict resolution, or humanitarian work. Proven management skills are essential, along with extensive experience in political outreach and policy formulation. Familiarity with the UN system and experience working with Somali government counterparts are highly desirable. The role requires a strong ability to connect various sectors and manage complex operations effectively.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in Political Science, International Relations, Social Science, Law, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: The position requires at least 15 years of relevant experience, with a focus on political affairs, diplomacy, and international relations. Candidates should have a strong background in conflict resolution and coordination, with proven management capabilities. Experience in the UN system, particularly with both Missions and UNCTs, is desirable, as is experience in coordinating external partnerships in a development context.
Languages: Fluency in English, both oral and written, is required for this position. Knowledge of another UN official language, such as French, is considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively within the UN framework.
