Job Overview:

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Human Rights Officer will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including: conducting investigations into arms transfers and their implications for human rights; gathering and analyzing information from various sources; documenting violations of international humanitarian law; interviewing victims and witnesses to corroborate allegations; monitoring trends and patterns of violations; utilizing mapping tools and satellite imagery for geolocation of incidents; ensuring the protection of victims and witnesses; preserving evidence and documentation related to investigations; drafting analytical documents, including gender analyses; and contributing to the Commission's reports. The officer will also be expected to perform other related duties as required, demonstrating professionalism and a commitment to the Commission's mandate.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in human rights, with a minimum of five years of progressively responsible work experience in the field. At least two years of this experience must involve conducting human rights investigations. Familiarity with the arms trade and relevant international laws is highly desirable. The ability to analyze complex information and conduct independent research is essential, as is a commitment to ethical standards in investigations. The officer must demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and effective planning and organizing skills.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. This educational background is crucial for understanding the legal frameworks and social contexts relevant to the Commission's work.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of progressively responsible work experience in human rights, with at least two years specifically focused on human rights investigations. Relevant experience in investigating arms transfers is considered an asset, as is experience working in or on the Middle East region for at least one year. Candidates should demonstrate a track record of conducting thorough investigations and producing high-quality analytical reports.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both oral and written, is required for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in French is also necessary.
