UNIC Washington D.C. serves as the primary source of information about the United Nations system in the United States, engaging with various stakeholders including academia, media, and think tanks. The organization aims to communicate the work of the United Nations effectively and facilitate high-level visits of UN officials to Washington D.C.

Job Overview:
The Deputy Director will play a crucial role in supporting and leading the development and implementation of comprehensive communication strategies and programs tailored for specific audiences in Washington, D.C. and across the United States. This position involves acting as a key advisor to the Director, particularly in public speaking engagements and outreach efforts. The Deputy Director will also oversee a team of communications officers, ensuring effective planning, work allocation, and staff development. The role requires a strategic approach to enhance the perception of the United Nations among various audiences, including government officials and civil society organizations. The Deputy Director will be responsible for assessing the effectiveness of communication strategies and making necessary adjustments to improve outreach efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Deputy Director's responsibilities include supporting the Director in conceptualizing and implementing communication strategies, acting as a spokesperson, providing technical and policy advice, leading a team of communications officers, overseeing the preparation of reports and documents, conducting political liaison work with Congress and other organizations, promoting joint communications ventures, and developing institutional communication policies. The role also involves assessing the effectiveness of communication programs, providing materials for senior officials, and managing high-profile multimedia campaigns.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in communications, journalism, international relations, or public administration. The role requires a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in relevant fields, including at least three years at the international level. Experience in managing relationships with government officials and civil society organizations in the U.S. is essential, along with a proven track record in strategic communications and public outreach. Familiarity with resource administration, including budget preparation and personnel management, is desirable.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communications, journalism, international relations, public administration, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in communications, journalism, international relations, or public administration, with at least three years of experience at the international level. Candidates should have experience working with government officials, international organizations, and civil society organizations, particularly in the United States. Experience in strategic communications and public outreach is essential, and familiarity with digital media components, including social media, is desirable. Experience with the United Nations or a comparable international organization is also preferred.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French or another official United Nations language is desirable, which would enhance the candidate's ability to communicate effectively in a multilingual environment.
