Job Overview: The Interpreter will be responsible for providing high-quality interpretation services during meetings of various United Nations bodies, ensuring that speeches or statements given in English, Spanish, and/or Russian are accurately interpreted into French. The role requires the incumbent to manage up to seven meetings per week, with the potential for additional meetings, and to cover sensitive discussions. The Interpreter will also lead teams of interpreters, instruct trainees, and may take on programming responsibilities. Additionally, the role involves data collection and analysis to support decision-making processes, utilizing data visualization techniques to present insights effectively.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Interpreter's duties include:
Providing interpretation services for up to seven meetings per week, ensuring clarity and accuracy in conveying messages from English, Spanish, and/or Russian into French.
Leading teams of interpreters during meetings, ensuring effective communication and collaboration among team members.
Covering sensitive meetings that require a high level of professionalism and discretion.
Instructing and advising interpreter trainees, sharing expertise and best practices to enhance their skills.
Performing as a Programming Officer when required, contributing to the planning and organization of interpretation services.
Collecting and analyzing data related to interpretation services, identifying trends and patterns to inform management decisions.
Creating visual representations of data, such as graphs and charts, to facilitate understanding and reporting.
Performing other related duties as assigned by the Chief of the French Interpretation Section.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have a first-level university degree or equivalent qualification. Additionally, passing the United Nations Competitive Examination for French Interpreters is a mandatory requirement for this position. The role demands a high level of professionalism, including the ability to work under pressure and deliver accurate interpretations across a wide range of subjects. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret data effectively to support decision-making processes.
Educational Background: A first-level degree from a recognized university or an institution of equivalent status is required for this position. This educational background is essential to ensure that candidates possess the necessary knowledge and skills to perform effectively in the role of Interpreter.
Experience: Candidates must have at least five years of professional interpreting experience, particularly within international organizations. Out of these five years, a minimum of two years of experience within the United Nations Common System or similar organizations is desirable. Experience in data analytics or related fields is also considered an asset, as it enhances the candidate's ability to analyze and interpret data relevant to the role.
Languages: The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. For this position, a perfect command of French is required, as it is expected to be the incumbent's main language. Additionally, candidates must possess an excellent command of English, and proficiency in Spanish and/or Russian is also highly desirable, as it expands the candidate's ability to interpret effectively across multiple languages.
