Job Overview: The Internet Resources Intern position is designed to provide support within the Information Systems Management Section of the IIIM. The intern will engage in various tasks related to internet research, information governance, data analysis, and script development. This internship serves as a Generic Job Opening (GJO) to build a pool of qualified candidates for internship vacancies that will arise between 1 August 2026 and 31 July 202
The intern will be expected to conduct targeted open-source research and analysis, synthesize relevant literature, and assist in compiling research findings into a final presentation for the IIIM. The role requires a proactive approach to learning and contributing to the IIIM's mission, with a focus on maintaining confidentiality and professionalism throughout the internship.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: conducting targeted open-source research and analysis on political, economic, social, technological, and legal issues related to the Syrian situation; assisting with frameworks and processes related to information governance, data analysis, and script development; compiling research and analysis into a final presentation for the IIIM; completing assigned tasks in a timely and accurate manner; meeting deadlines and responding promptly to instructions; maintaining confidentiality of all records and information accessed during the internship; working independently and collaboratively as part of a team; and demonstrating professionalism and respect for colleagues and stakeholders. The intern will also be expected to produce a final presentation that details their research and analysis for the IIIM's use.
Required Qualifications: Candidates are not required to have prior experience, but relevant coursework in fields such as international relations, journalism, law, international politics, information governance, machine learning, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">information security, privacy law, data protection, digital forensics, data science, engineering, software engineering, or closely related fields is preferred. The organization is open to a broad range of educational, project, volunteering, and research experience backgrounds, emphasizing the importance of cultural sensitivity and the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Educational Background: Applicants must be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). This educational requirement ensures that candidates possess a foundational understanding of the relevant fields necessary for the internship.
Experience: While no prior experience is necessary, candidates should demonstrate a willingness to learn and engage with the tasks assigned. The IIIM values diverse experiences and backgrounds, and candidates with relevant academic or project experience will be viewed favorably. The internship is designed to provide practical experience in a professional setting, and candidates should be prepared to adapt to the demands of the role.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French and/or Arabic is considered an advantage, as it may enhance the intern's ability to engage with a wider range of materials and stakeholders within the IIIM.

The expected duration of the internship is a maximum of six months, starting between 1 August 2026 and 31 July 2027, with the possibility of adjusting the start date and duration based on the successful candidate's request. Interns are responsible for all expenses incurred during the internship, including securing adequate insurance coverage. The IIIM will provide information and supporting documents for visa applications for in-person internships. Interns must maintain confidentiality regarding unpublished information obtained during the internship and are bound by the same duties and obligations as staff members. The United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process.
