Job Details
Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research organization established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. It employs physicists and engineers who utilize the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. CERN has been at the forefront of particle physics research since its inception and is known for its commitment to diversity and inclusion, which has been a core value since its foundation. The organization operates in multiple countries and collaborates with numerous international institutions, making it a hub for scientific innovation and discovery.
Job Overview: The Technical Student Programme at CERN offers students an unparalleled opportunity to gain practical experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering. This program is designed for students who are required or encouraged by their university or institute to undertake an internship. Participants will engage in cutting-edge technology and contribute to various disciplines, including structural mechanics, machine development, magnet technology, fluid dynamics, heating systems, mechatronics, computer-aided design, and metrology. This experience not only enhances students' knowledge but also serves as a significant addition to their CV, showcasing their involvement in a prestigious international organization. It is important to note that students specializing in theoretical or experimental particle physics are not eligible for this program, ensuring that the focus remains on mechanical engineering disciplines.
Duties and Responsibilities: As a participant in the Technical Student Programme, you will be expected to undertake a variety of tasks that may include but are not limited to: assisting in the design and development of mechanical systems, conducting experiments and analyses related to mechanical engineering, collaborating with experienced engineers and researchers on ongoing projects, contributing to the documentation and reporting of project outcomes, and participating in team meetings to discuss progress and challenges. You will also have the opportunity to learn from experts in the field and gain insights into the practical applications of your studies in a real-world setting.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the Technical Student Programme, candidates must meet several requirements: they must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State, have completed at least 18 months or 3 semesters of their undergraduate studies by the time of the next student selection round in May 2025, and remain registered as a full-time student during the internship. Additionally, candidates should possess a good command of either English or French, as these are the primary languages used at CERN.
Educational Background: Candidates must be enrolled in a university program related to Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. They should have completed a minimum of 18 months of their undergraduate studies, which demonstrates a solid foundation in the principles of engineering and prepares them for the practical challenges they will face during the internship.
Experience: While specific prior experience is not mandatory, candidates should have a foundational understanding of mechanical engineering principles and practices, as well as a willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges. The program is designed to provide students with hands-on experience, so a proactive attitude and eagerness to engage in practical work are essential.
Languages: A good knowledge of English or French is mandatory for this position, as these are the working languages at CERN. Proficiency in either language will facilitate effective communication within the team and with other stakeholders. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not required.
Additional Notes: The Technical Student Programme offers a contract of association lasting from 4 to 12 months, providing students with a monthly allowance of 3452 Swiss Francs (net of tax), along with a travel allowance. Depending on personal circumstances, there may be additional supplements for those who are married or have children. Participants will also benefit from CERN's comprehensive health insurance scheme, with contributions automatically deducted from their allowance. Furthermore, students will receive 2.5 days of paid leave per month. To apply, candidates must submit a CV in English or French in PDF format, and while supplementary documents such as academic transcripts or reference letters are recommended, they are not mandatory. The application deadline is set for March 3rd, 2025, at 23:59 CET.
