The organization operates in multiple countries and is known for its groundbreaking experiments and contributions to particle physics. Diversity is a core value at CERN, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity and collaboration in scientific endeavors.

Job Overview:
The Doctoral Student Programme at CERN offers a unique opportunity for students to work on their doctoral thesis while being immersed in a world-class scientific environment for up to 36 months. This program is designed for students specializing in Applied Physics, Engineering, or Computing, allowing them to engage in cutting-edge research and contribute to significant scientific projects. Participants will have the chance to work on various topics, including applied physics, IT, mathematics, and engineering, while collaborating with leading experts in their fields. The program not only enhances academic knowledge but also provides practical experience in real-world scientific applications, making it an invaluable opportunity for aspiring researchers.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As a participant in the Doctoral Student Programme, you will be expected to engage in research that contributes to your doctoral thesis. This may involve working on specific projects related to particle physics, engineering, or technology development. You will collaborate with CERN supervisors and your university thesis supervisor to ensure that your work aligns with the requirements of your PhD program. Additionally, you will participate in various scientific activities, including seminars, workshops, and collaborative research efforts, which will enhance your learning experience and professional development. You may also be involved in presenting your research findings at conferences or contributing to publications in scientific journals.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for the Doctoral Student Programme, candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State. Applicants should have either started or be about to start a doctoral program at a university, with their work at CERN being part of their thesis requirements. A good command of English or French is essential, as these are the primary languages used in the organization. Candidates should demonstrate a strong academic background in their chosen field and a commitment to advancing their research skills.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be enrolled in a doctoral program at a recognized university. This program should be relevant to the fields of Applied Physics, Engineering, or Computing. The educational background should include a strong foundation in scientific principles and methodologies, as well as relevant coursework that supports the research being conducted at CERN. Academic arrangements will be made between the candidate's university and CERN to ensure that the work aligns with the requirements for obtaining a PhD.

Experience:
While specific prior experience may not be mandatory, candidates should demonstrate a solid understanding of their field through academic achievements or relevant projects. Experience in research, internships, or practical applications related to physics, engineering, or computing will be advantageous. The program is designed for early-career researchers, so a willingness to learn and adapt is crucial for success in this role.

Languages:
A good knowledge of English or French is mandatory for all candidates. Proficiency in either language will facilitate effective communication within the diverse international environment at CERN. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not required.

Additional Notes:
The Doctoral Student Programme offers an initial contract of association for 12 months, which can be renewed up to a total of 36 months. The total duration may be spread over four consecutive years to accommodate time spent at the university. Participants will receive a monthly allowance of 3868 Swiss Francs (net of tax), along with a travel allowance and potential supplements for those with dependents. CERN provides comprehensive health insurance coverage, and participants are entitled to 2.5 days of paid leave per month. It is important to note that CERN does not cover any university-related costs or tuition fees.
