Job Overview:
The Managing Attorney position at IRC Denver is a pivotal role aimed at leading a newly launched program dedicated to providing legal representation for unaccompanied children who have been released from the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). This role requires not only legal expertise but also a strong commitment to mentoring and motivating a team of legal professionals in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment. The Managing Attorney will be responsible for overseeing the legal strategy of the program, ensuring that unaccompanied children receive comprehensive legal services, including representation in immigration court and other legal proceedings. The position also involves collaboration with community partners and participation in IRC’s broader immigration network, contributing to the organization’s mission of protecting the rights of humanitarian immigrants.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Managing Attorney will have a range of responsibilities, including: overseeing the legal strategy and daily operations of a small team of legal practitioners; providing direct legal representation to unaccompanied children in immigration court and other relevant legal settings; developing and monitoring intake procedures; employing adaptive management techniques to support and mentor staff; engaging with the Vera Institute of Justice for technical assistance; facilitating grant management processes; ensuring compliance with legal case management procedures; creating outreach strategies to build relationships with community organizations; serving as an expert on U.S. law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">immigration law; and contributing to IRC’s Strategic Action Plan. The role also requires regular communication with IRC’s Immigration Technical Unit and collaboration with other program areas to ensure client-centered services.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a law degree (JD or LLM) from an ABA-accredited U.S. institution and be admitted to the Colorado state bar or be willing to seek admission. A minimum of 5 years of experience providing direct representation in immigration court and before USCIS for unaccompanied minors and asylum applicants is required. Strong legal supervision skills, the ability to manage a high case volume, and experience in organizing immigration workshops are essential. Candidates should demonstrate outstanding communication skills, a commitment to working with humanitarian immigrants, and a trauma-informed approach to client interactions. A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are also necessary for this role.

Educational Background:
The position requires a Juris Doctor (JD) or Master of Laws (LLM) degree from an ABA-accredited institution. Candidates must also have admission to the Colorado state bar or be willing to pursue it. This educational background is crucial for providing the legal expertise necessary to represent unaccompanied children effectively.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least 5 years of experience in immigration law, specifically providing direct representation to unaccompanied minors and asylum seekers. Additional Notes:
This is a full-time, regular position scheduled for 37.5 hours per week, classified as exempt and not eligible for overtime. The compensation range for this role is between $80,000 and $85,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
